The book arrived in the mail while I was on a little May Day holiday in Helsinki. Thanks again for organizing the RABCK draw, Marcenda, and thanks for the book! I'm always interested in old British children's literature and had somehow never even heard of this one, so I'm looking forward to reading the book.

4 out of 10

It took me ages to get through this book because I've frankly used it to help me fall asleep at night... and it's been very effective at that task.

This book is a thumping bore, I'm afraid. If you want quality English children's fantasy, go grab Peter Pan or the Narnia books. Water Babies has no interesting characters in it at all, and when it's not being preachy it's nonsensically and annoyingly silly. I can't believe it's been a popular children's book at some point.

BTW, the very dull covers of this book just scream to be decorated somehow, but I'm not so sure whether I can be bothered to do it myself. We'll see what I'll think up to do with the book.

Thank you, Niora! It will be interesting to find out if I like the book or not ! It will take some time before I will read it, though.

This edition was published 1965 - it was originally written 1863.
Lovely illustration by Charles Mozley in this book, which I enjoyed.

Well, I liked this and I also didn't like this, at least as much as I expected.

The main character, Tom, a clever but uneducated chimney-sweep-boy who lives pretty hard life but doesn't know of any better. This is a story of him growing up to a fine young man through many extraordinary adventures.

I loved the language. The book was beautifully written and had also some of that "nonsense" that I greatly enjoy. Lot of repetition, synonymes and funny self-made words. Names like professor Ptthmllnsprts who was the chief professor of Necrobioneopalaeonthydrochthonanthropopithekology! And Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid and Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby.

In this book you could find interesting things like parts of Greek mythology and philosophy, Atlantis (= St. Brandan's Isle) and even Evoluton theory!

What I didn't care too much was the fact that the book was very "pointing" and instructive (well, maybe it has something to do with the time it was written) and also some parts were bit boring (like playing and discussing with all the water creatures ).

All in all this was quite fantastic book written with huge imagination!
