Book Description
Penned by Whedon and Brett Matthews, who wrote several episodes of Firefly as well as Dark Horse's final Angel comics series and the animated Chronicles of Riddick feature "Dark Fury," Serenity follows a ship full of mercenaries, fugitives and one law-abiding prostitute in their pursuit for fast cash and a little peace along the fringes of space. The ragtag crew of Serenity take on a scavenger mission with the hopes of earning enough dough to disappear for a while. Only too late do they realize the whole gig is orchestrated by an old enemy eager remake their acquaintance with the help of some covert-operatives known only as the Blue Gloves. Artist Will Conrad (Marvel's Elektra and Witches) and colorist Laura Martin (Astonishing X-Men and The Ultimates) paint a rough and wild world of adventure across a strange and dangerous universe, in this not-to-be-missed tale straight from the brain of pop-culture mastermind Joss Whedon!
*****

This slim volume fills in the gap between the end of the TV show and the movie, Serenity. A must-read for fans, and a nice stand-alone comic book for those new to the series.

This arrived in today's mail - I can hardly wait to crack it open. I'll have it read in the next day or two. And then I'll be ready to FINALLY watch "Serenity!"

Thanks, K! :D :D :D

Journal Entry 3 by herebedragons from Cotati, California USA on Tuesday, March 13, 2007
This came to me as a bookring book from my good friend Midwinter, who knew I'd recently discovered "Firefly." It was perfect timing for me - I've watched the entire television series, but had been waiting for the right moment to watch "Serenity." This graphic novel takes place between the two (the series and the film).

It's a beautiful book - the artwork is gorgeous, and the storyline is interesting. The trouble I have with graphic novels (and probably the reason I've not read many) is that they're too short! Not as much dialogue and character development as I'd like to have had, although I will say that quite a lot of character development can be done visually. (Like the moment Book and Mal have together; I won't say what, since it's spoilerish, I guess, but it's fantastic, and if you've already read this book, you'll know which moment I mean). :D Plus, it's just wonderful to get *anything* extra in this amazing world Whedon created. I can easily see how this bit of story could have become an hour-long episode, and I wishwishwish the show hadn't been cancelled!

In any case, I really enjoyed this, even if it did seem short. Thanks, K, for sharing it with me! It will be on its way to the next person on the ring as soon as I have the address. (PM to katintheboots has been sent).

I found this on my front stoop when I left this afternoon. I just finished a book, so it arrives with perfect timing.

Journal Entry 5 by katintheboots on Saturday, March 24, 2007
I finished this yesterday, and must say I quite enjoyed it. About my only disappointment was that it didn't explain Shepherd Book's origins, a mystery that was hinted at in the series and never really addressed in the movie. Ahh well. At any rate, this little story is a must-read for Firefly/Serenity fans.

Even though it's a tiny volume, I didn't expect to finish it quite so quickly. I will PM ScarlettWannaB for an address, and get this on its way.

I love Serenity and Firefly and this book was fun to read but not as in depth as I had hoped. I loved the different artwork and it was a very fast read. But who is Shepherd Book really? I'll be sending it on as soon as I hear back from tchouli.
Thanks for Sharing.

UPdate so I didn't send it off as soon as I heard back from tchouli. Sorry I've got it packaged and postaged it's in the mail tomorrow.

this show should have never been cancelled.

Journal Entry 10 by tchouli from Snellville, Georgia USA on Tuesday, May 8, 2007
thanks for sharing this - now i need to rewatch the series and the movie.

i do agree with ScarlettwannaB in regards to shepherd book? just who was he?

i became a firefly fan backwards - saw the movie then the series. for the last couple of years, dragon*con, here in atlanta, has had the stars from firefly at the con. they are a big draw and they are very personable.

i really hate it when the networks cancel good shows after only a season. and, leave us with cliff hangers.
*sigh*

will ship out as soon as i have an addy.

This arrived in the mail yesterday but didn't get around to journaling till today. I am looking forward to reading it. It seems that bookrays/rings on come in groups so I've got a few ahead of this one but because it is short, might get read first. LOL!

Well, I read this book last night in about 30 minutes. It was so much fun and a nice little tale that before I knew it, I'd finished. I liked the fact that they filled the gap between the end of the show and the movie. What great characters and such a nice set up for a universe gone nuts!!

Of course it had me craving for more--I can't believe this show was cancelled after one season. I'm waiting for Booksnbeer's address so I can send it on its way.

Excellent, fun, adult comic book. I read it in about an hour but, I didn’t want it to finish. I wish this series was not cancelled. I have the DVDs and watched them in series before I started this book. I am not seeing that this is a transition from the series to the movie. This feels like just another hour show during the time of the series. The end of the series leaves you in a whole different scenario then this book picks up from.

All in all – I greatly enjoyed it and realize that I might look for other graphic novels.

I have already dropped this into the mail – it is on it’s way to the next person on the list.

Got it! The book is in my greedy little hands. I absolutely loved the series, I think Joss Whedon is da bomb, and I can't wait to read this little graphic novel.

Thanks for sharing!
Graphic novel

Synopsis:
Here's how it is—in a universe filled with hearts and minds as cold and dark as the reaches of space, one small Firefly-class starship named Serenity takes its ragtag crew of mercenaries, outlaws, and fugitives in search of a job, any job, that'll earn them enough cash to afford the most elusive commodity—peace.

Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, unveils a previously unknown chapter in the lives of his favorite band of space brigands in this prequel to the Serenity feature film—the blockbuster follow-up to Whedon's cult-hit TV show Firefly.

Journal Entry 27 by mellion108 from Waterford, Michigan USA on Wednesday, October 10, 2007
Hooray! Loved it, loved it, loved it. I've just recently gotten back into reading graphic novels, and this one is a treat. I loved Firefly, and the hubby and I rushed to see Serenity the night it was released. This little story does a great job at giving us a look into what happened leading up to the events in the Serenity film. (And I won't go into why I was so pissed off at Whedon after seeing Serenity so that I don't spoil the movie for anyone here who hasn't yet seen the movie!)

The artwork in this novel is so beautiful. I really enjoyed going back and taking the time to look more carefully at each panel.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I have Lemonitsa's address and will get this in the mail in the next few days.

For the past couple of days I have been under the weather... this morning I got a padded yellow envelope with the best thing to cheer me up!! More Firefly. *squee* I absolutely loved the series. I hated FOX for cancelling it. Like mellion108, I rushed to see Serenity, and poor Joss, he'd have been running scared if he'd been with me after the movie was finished... but that doesn't matter now. Now, I am off to love this graphic novel, and I'll be back when I've had my fill! :)

Journal Entry 29 by Lemonitsa from Montréal, Québec Canada on Tuesday, October 30, 2007
Mmmm! That was great. I sure missed the crew. I think that I must have read it 6-7 times, and I am definitely happy! :)

Actually arrived before Christmas but I neglected to journal it then. To my surprise WistfulDragon was kind enough to give me my very own (hardback) copy for christmas. Nevertheless I have read this copy now, and shall contact the next in line for sending ASAP. Enjoyable stuff, I have the movie on DVD but I don't want to watch it as it may well be the last Firefly/Serenity item ever and I'd miss not having something to look forward to. Like many I can't believe they didn't make more series, it's so much better than Buffy.

Journal Entry 36 by ReetPetite from Beeston, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom on Monday, March 10, 2008
I think I have the same problem as HallieK with comic books. When there a a few bubbles in the box which do you read first? I find myself going back to re-read it. I enjoyed this book & I felt it bridged the gap between the series & Serenity.
I didn't think that the drawings of Simon looked like Simon but all the other characters were well drawn & spoke how you'd expect them to. I liked the room that the guy who hated Mal was in, with all the 'I hate Reynolds' graffiti.
Thanks for sharing midwinter.

Enjoyed revisiting the 'Serenity' universe (Captain Tightpants - sigh!). I don't usually read graphic novels so this was something of a first for me - I found myself enjoying the 'filmic' quality of the panels, though was a little disappointed that the story was so brief.

Now to head back to the DVDs for some more Firefly fun! I have VeganMedusa's address and will send this on in the next few days....

Journal Entry 42 by VeganMedusa from Invercargill, Southland New Zealand on Wednesday, July 23, 2008
Thanks lmn60! Delivered to me in bed this morning (nice having a postal hubby) and read already. Hubby wants to read it too, so I've given him a week maximum.
Nice to see the gang again. Didn't much like Inara's drawings but the rest were good - although there was one place where I had to really study to see whether it was Kaylee or River talking.
I suspected something like the reason Shepherd left Serenity, it makes sense.
Thanks midwinter for sending this around the world to us all. When I joined up and was number 20-something I kind of thought it would never actually get to me! :)

Journal Entry 43 by VeganMedusa from Invercargill, Southland New Zealand on Monday, August 4, 2008
Posted to anwyn today.
Hubby enjoyed it greatly as well. Especially Jayne - he always gets the best lines. We watched the first episode of Firefly on Saturday night - we hadn't realised that we hadn't seen it yet (due to stupid TV programmers who put good programmes on at 11pm without advertising them). So that was great, especially seeing the beginning of the whole Dobson storyline.
Thanks all! :)

It was great to see and hear (read...) the Firefly/Serenity crew again! But as everybody else said...it was too short!!! Just enough for my underground ride from home to work.....and what about my way back? Ok, I can always re-read it... ;)
And I actually hoped they would give us more details, more new insights about the characters and the story. Do they think to publish another comic maybe? Have they already done so?

Thanks everybody for keeping it travelling all this way and all this time. And thanks especially to midwinter for making it available.

Needless to say it took me all of 5 minutes to read it. And even more needless to say I absolutely love it. I will have to go through it several more times to appreciate the artwork and the finer details, though.

Thanks for loaning it to me, samulli. I promise I will hurry up with sending it back. But first I will enjoy seeing Mal's crew again.

It was such a pleasure to read this little book! The characters are gorgeous and resemble the actors that much I could hardly believe it. Of course the story is much too short but as exciting and funny as the TV series itself.
