Synopsis from Amazon.co.uk

An escaped convict threatens more than the summer tourist trade in the gripping fifth thriller featuring Detectives Fry and Cooper. 'Today was the day Detective Constable Ben Cooper was supposed to have died. For practical purposes, he was already dead.' Fourteen years ago Mansell Quinn was jailed for murdering his mistress. Now he has escaped and is on the run, hiding amongst the Peak District's many summer tourists. When Quinn's ex-wife is found dead, DC Cooper and his tough boss DS Fry suspect it is only a matter of time before another victim is found. And Cooper -- as the son of Quinn's arresting officer -- is high on the list. As they desperately search the case files for clues and the death toll rises, darker possibilities emerge. Are the killings the work of a deranged killer who cannot be found -- or a desperate man, wrongly convicted?

I bought this book with a gift certificate I won at BookiesToo.

Another well written book in the series. Great characters, intricate plot, keeps you guessing till the end.

Journal Entry 6 by Betty22 from Wandsworth, Greater London United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 31, 2007
This arrived safely with me today. Thanks!
I have several other Stephen Booth books to read - do I have to read them in order?
Also, is there anybody after me, or do you want the book returned Scotsbookie?

Journal Entry 7 by Betty22 from Wandsworth, Greater London United Kingdom on Monday, April 14, 2008
This has taken me ages, as I wanted to read them in order, and I'm really glad that I did, as they've made far more sense, and I really enjoyed this 5th book in the series as a result.
I've arranged with vespa for this to be passed to her friend at the Convention, along with the others in the series, so hopefully she'll get this book soon.
Thanks so much for letting this be in a ray - a very good read. I'm now going to get the next 2 for my other half's bday, just so that I can read them too!!

Journal Entry 8 by Vespa from Weymouth, Dorset United Kingdom on Monday, April 28, 2008
I met with Jillbe this morning and handed over a ransom of chocolate cake and coffee in return for this book and 3 others in the series. I have requested the first in the series via bookmooch and as soon as it arrives I will make a start on them.
Thank you so much for letting me read them in order

Journal Entry 9 by Vespa from Weymouth, Dorset United Kingdom on Monday, June 23, 2008
I've really enjoyed reading this series and I'm really looking forward to reading more soon. Thanks for sharing.
As I'm now at the end of the ray, I will see if anyone else wants to read them spiral style

Journal Entry 10 by Vespa from Weymouth, Dorset United Kingdom on Monday, May 4, 2009
i've offered these books around as a spiral for some time now with no takers, so the time has come to release them . Jillbe brought these back from the UnConvention, so I'm putting them in a box heading her way for her to read or release as she wishes

Journal Entry 11 by jillbe from Dorchester, Dorset United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 6, 2009

This book is one of a set being organised as bookrays for attendees of the 2011 UK BookCrossing Unconvention in Nottingham in September. The aim is to allow as many attendees as possible to read the speaker authors' books before the event.

Full details of the Bookray participants for this book can be found on the Uncon website here

The following rules apply:

1) Please check the website for the most up to date reader list just before sending the book on. The order of the rays may be tweaked a little bit as we go on, dependent on availability of readers. Contact the next reader via PM (or other means) in plenty of time so that you can get the book moving again as soon as possible.

2) If you're contacted about receiving one of the books but aren't able to commit to reading it at that time, please ask to be moved to a later point in the list so that the books keep moving as much as possible, and let me know so I can update the webpage accordingly.

3) Enjoy the books!!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I stayed up until the very early hours of this morning to finish this - once the action really started to pick up and I could see I was over halfway through I just couldn't put it down!! This was a really well crafted mystery, plenty of red herrings, lots of twists in the story, some great characters - what more could you want?
Have posted this off on its Uncon bookray journey this morning - hope you all enjoy it!

Journal Entry 17 by wingNu-Kneeswing at Knaresborough, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Thursday, July 14, 2011
Thank you once again, pingucb, for the next book in this fantastic series. I've been devouring them avidly - and I'm sure this will be no exception, especially given that it kept you from sleeping! I'll happily put aside my other reads and start this one straightaway, thank you very much! Your package was a lovely welcome home on our return from a short break in the Lake District, very relaxing and not a drop of rain! Our friendly next-door-neighbour was keeping it safe for me :-)

Journal Entry 18 by wingNu-Kneeswing at Knaresborough, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Saturday, July 16, 2011
Well, that was all very thrilling - which I hope is an acceptable euphemism for terrifying! There's no possible inducement that could ever get me inside any sort of cave, pothole, grotto, hole in a rock .... so I found Mr Booth's all-too-realistic scenes inside the Devil's Arse and its surroundings had me shaking and covered in goose bumps! I couldn't put the book down until I was safely back out in the open air again :-) What a writer!
While staying in Castleton last October we walked up to the Peak Cavern entrance where I had a photo taken alongside the board which asks: How deep do you want to go? Me? I'm staying on ground level, mate! My thumb and forefinger are practically touching!
There was one passage on page 18 that had me smiling: "As a child Cooper had himself visited Castleton on a school outing. In term time, the streets of the town were full of children with worksheets." Yes, nothing's changed - they were still swarming all over the town when we were there!
Enough of the personal reminiscences ...
This is a fantastic series. I'm running out of superlatives to say just how much I've enjoyed every book so far and how eagerly I'm awaiting the next Ben Cooper and Diane Fry investigation :-) I hope it's not quite as thrilling as this one, though (LOL!)
It'll be on its way to earthcaroleanne on Monday.

I'm with Nu-knees on this - why would anyone want to go pot-holing or caving? I'm not sure I enjoyed this book as much as the others but it was still good. I think there are too many unanswered questions around Angie. But maybe that is just to make you read the next one to find out more. Diane was made to seem a little bit more human in this and a little more sympathetic towards Ben. Maybe it was the hayfever.

Journal Entry 28 by Mai-day at Nottingham, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom on Thursday, September 29, 2011
Thank you - almost no sooner started than finished. I particularly enjoyed this after hearing Stephen Booth talk at the Unconvention - what a really nice, unassuming chap he was. I seem to be the last on this ray - do you want me to send it back to you pingucb?

Are you sure you want to delete this item? It cannot be undone.
