Reserved for a bookbox. I'm going to include some goodies for the person who chooses this book in light of its less than stellar physical condition.

I got this book almost a decade ago in my first semester in college, and read it for a comparative lit class. It has obviously been read by a number of people (mostly before me, but I've had people borrow it too). It is not in the best shape, but can undoubtedly be read once or twice before it disintigrates.

From Library Journal
In a startling departure from her previous novels ( Lady Oracle , Surfacing ), respected Canadian poet and novelist Atwood presents here a fable of the near future. In the Republic of Gilead, formerly the United States, far-right Schlafly/Falwell-type ideals have been carried to extremes in the monotheocratic government. The resulting society is a feminist's nightmare: women are strictly controlled, unable to have jobs or money and assigned to various classes: the chaste, childless Wives; the housekeeping Marthas; and the reproductive Handmaids, who turn their offspring over to the "morally fit" Wives. The tale is told by Offred (read: "of Fred"), a Handmaid who recalls the past and tells how the chilling society came to be. This powerful, memorable novel is highly recommended for most libraries. BOMC featured alternate.

Looks like an interesting read. :) I'd heard of this book before, and been told that it was a real good one to read, so I couldn't resist. I don't mind books that aren't in great shape either. The goodies are lovely though! I know I'll use them, because I'm always writing to folks.

Great book. Wondefully well written, and a very interesting story. I was pulled right in! It's like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Children of Men (if it's anything like the movie, haven't gotten my hands on the book yet). I really enjoyed reading this book. I finished it within 24 hours of starting it! I really can't believe it myself... I've been reading like a maniac lately, but I keep having such great books available.

Thank you so much for sharing this book with me through the First Timers book box, emtmeghan. It really was a pleasure to read. I'll be sure to pass it along. It's too good to keep to myself!
