Purchased as part of a massive on-line book binge enabled by a gift from my late mother-in-law (thanks, Ruthie).

Although the behaviour, thought patterns and attempted diet fixes described in The Hungry Years were woefully familiar, there wasn't as much to this book as I hoped there would be. Author and English journalist William Leith comes across as basically manic -- a confessed over-eater, over-drinker and intermittent cocaine user who also drops some heavy hints about sex addiction. And the book is a kind of sustained rant about all those issues, which ends on a weirdly unresolved note (though Leith seems to be claiming he's licked his issues through psychotherapy targeted at some garden variety childhood abandonment experiences). On the whole, the book wasn't very convincing on any level, and I closed it meanly remarking that I'll be keeping an eye out for The Hungry Years II: Bigger, Drunker, Stoned Again
