As a novel, this book wasn't particularly memorable, although the setting was interesting -- approximately half the action takes place on a northern Alberta fire tower, where Priscilla "Percy" Turner, the protagonist, spends the summer watching for forest fires. Burning Ground is really two novels in one: first, the story of Percy's childhood in an Alberta trailer park, where she must negotiate early adolescent sexual relationships with her best friend Marlea and the masochistic father of a child she babysits; second, the story of Percy's adult relationships with Marlea and Gilmore, another forest fire watcher she meets on the job. Of the two parts of the novel, I far preferred the tale of Percy's childhood, which was far more emotionally complex than her adulthood. (The adult Percy vascillates between an on-again-off-again relationship with the sexually ambivalent Marlea, and an unconsummated internet connection with Gilmore.) I couldn't really recommend this one, unless for the unique description of a summer spent alone in northern Alberta.
