Beautifully written book with praise from Ernest Hemingway on the back cover "she has written so well that I feel completely ashamed of myself as a writer". Beryl Markham is born in England and moves to Africa with her father as a child. She becomes and African Bush pilot in the 30's and is the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from East to West. Out of Africa fans will enjoy this book because it touches on the lives of some of the same characters. She was in independent, liberated woman in a time and place where there weren't many.

I saw the release alert and since I was going that way and needed gas I thought I'd give it a shot. Book was moved from the table over to a little ledge on the side.

I'm not really interested in reading it (the chase was fun though) and I see it on someone else's wishlist. I've contacted them and if they want it it'll be going down to San Diego.

*Promise I won't chase all your books down! It's just so nice to see others releasing here!

I first heard about this book when I read Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons and added it to my wishlist at that time. I was thrilled when LGinder offered to send it to me. Thanks so much!

A memoir chronicling the English-born author’s experiences growing up in the early 1900s with her father in Kenya (then British East Africa), learning, playing and hunting with the natives. As a young adult, she trained horses. She later took up flying, becoming a bush pilot and the first person to fly solo non-stop over the Atlantic Ocean east to west against the prevailing winds.

Although there is some controversy as to whether she or her third husband wrote this book, it is considered a classic of outdoor literature. Here’s an example of some of the beautiful and thought-provoking prose: “What a child does not know and does not want to know of race and colour and class, he learns soon enough as he grows to see each man flipped inexorably into some predestined groove like a penny or a sovereign in a banker’s rack.”
