I was buying the new Kirino novel in Waterstones and I got Small Island free. It's not my type of book so I'll release it somewhere.

Yay, this is my first wild catch in Glasgow :-) By chance I logged onto my email account before I left the university library. Seeing this book had been released only 4 hours ago, I trotted up to Costa Coffee.

A quick search of the newspaper racks revealed nothing. As I started to leave, I decided to ask the staff if anyone had handed a book in. And loe and behold, this book had been shoved into the 'Lost Property' drawer. It is now in my mucky paws and I'm hoping to read it fairly soon. Thanks for sharing, gs102.

I finished this book whilst on a long weekend in Oxford. The story was rather interesting but I didn't feel the writing style awarded the book its status. Despite coming in at 500 pages, it was rather easy and quick to read. I prefer books I can have a bit more battle with.

The story of the book itself was fascinating and I enjoyed that aspect of the book. It's told through the first person narrative of four characters - a native English couple and a married couple from Jamaica who have recently emigrated to late 1940s Britain. The violence portrayed in this book was shocking and it's hard to believe this was happening over 50 years ago. Techically still happening today.

It's a decent piece of fiction which takes the tired topic of World War II and puts it on a different slant. Black armed forces that were regarded as heroes in the war saw their status drastically diminished when they returned to Britain looking for work. One aspect I found extremely interesting was Bernard, a white Englishman who served in India during the war. He develops a hatred for 'darkies'. One of my great-uncles served in India during the same period and developed a great dislike for Indians whilst there.

At times, the incidents in this book almost moved me to tears. The ending is rather poignant though the lead up to its events are rather obvious to the reader.
