The War Between the Tates

This is my favorite novel by Lurie. I love Alison Lurie because she is a genius at studying the psychology of her characters. In this book, both Tates are dissected and their thoughts analyzed, verbalized and explained to full clarity, and this makes them so easy to understand, and therefore to love or hate. My favorite part of the whole book is when Erica starts measuring the pros and cons of something in her head. Lurie is so structured in her analysis, it's almost impossible not to follow her thread. Moreover, this novel analyzes the disintegration of a marriage, and the dynamics and motivations are so universal and so timeless that they can be applied to the 60's or to the 00's alike.
Arrived today! Thank you! I also have Foreign Affairs in my TBR pile, and Alison Lurie is new to me. Both titles are on my "literature, arts and medicine" reading list. Thank you so much!
There's lots of stuff going on in this book. Politics, the Vietnam war, turmoil in relationships, the feminist movement... I appreciated the way the author made the Vietnam war and social circumstances parallel the war going on in Erica and Brian's relationship. I also thought it was very unique the way the author got into the various characters heads. She made me understand people in ways I've never considered before. Like, how Erica befriended Wendy and pushed her husband and Wendy together. In a way I was thinking "you've got to be kidding, why would she do that" but in getting to know the character, it began to make sense to me.
A very intriguing book. Thank you for sharing it with me! I will plan to ray your kindness forward. I don't see anyone looking for this one at Cliff's, but I do have a copy of Foreign Affairs in my TBR pile and many are listed at Cliff's for that one, so I think I might get to that one soon and pass it along in your honor. Thank you again!

Posting to Rororosie as a surprise RABCK along with a copy of Foreign Affairs that is on her wishlist.
Rororosie--please do with this as you wish. Since I recently read them both together, I thought I'd pass them along together in the event that you might be interested in this one also. I think I actually enjoyed this one more even though the other is a pulitzer prize winner! I really enjoyed Alison Lurie's writing.

Thanks for this book by an author on my wishlist. This author was highly recommended so I'm very curious to try her! Holding onto with the accompanying other RABCK by the same author until I get some reading off my to be read pile done!
