Fascinating main character with a plotline that grabs you and keeps you til the end . . . I will definitely be looking for more books by Hitchcock. Booklist review: "Jo Slater might come from humble origins, but she certainly has found her place among New York's elite. She serves on countless boards and is well versed in all things cultural. Jo's particular fascination is with Marie Antoinette, and she has designed a wing of the Municipal Museum modeled on the French heroine's own living quarters. Jo's own life turns tragic (just like Antoinette's) when her husband unexpectedly dies and leaves his entire estate to an enigmatic French countess. Jo, outwardly unflappable, musters all her strength and cunning to rebuild her life. She expected she would be at the unpleasant end of her former social circle's duplicity; what she didn't recognize was her own innate ability to connive and deceive in order to unseat the woman who stole her life. Jo's focus on that task becomes an obsession that both empowers and frightens her. Although Jo won't gain much sympathy for her quest to rebuild her fantasy life, her rags-to-riches-to-rags story generates undeniable charm and will leave readers rooting for a magical Cinderella ending."
