from amazon:
This work tells the story of an extremely cunning and fearsome whale which becomes the focus of fear and superstition among its pursuers. The one-legged Captain Ahab of the whaler Pequod takes the reader deeper and deeper into the realm of obsessive revenge and monomania.

I was surprised at how little Moby Dick features in the book, and when the long awaited confrontation between the whale and Captain Ahab finally arrives it only lasts a few pages and is almost anti-climatic. Most of the book is taken up with descriptions of whales and whaling, and Melville's digressions on just about anything. Not what I had been expecting.
