Journal Entry 1 by Tanamo from Hinckley, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 06, 2007
From the back of the book: This book tells the story of an imaginary painting by Vermeer, and the aspirations and longings of those whose lives it illuminates, and darkens. From a proud father regretting his lost love to a compromised French noblewoman, from a hanged girl to Vermeer's own gifted daughter, Susan Vreeland's beautiful and luminous tales link to form an evocative masterpiece.

Journal Entry 4 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Wednesday, January 30, 2008
Finally got round to reading this one & thoroughly enjoyed it. The mysterious painting is traced back to its creation and model through a series of connected stories. Of course the painting itself is a common feature of them all, for that is the point, but there are other ideas that echo too. Some of these are somewhat unsubtle - such as the sum of 24 guilders - but others are less tangible and help the book hang together better an outline of the concept would suggest.

Thanks for bringing this one along to the convention, CaterinaAnna. We went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam at Easter and saw several paintings by Vermeer, so I'm looking forward to reading this.

Journal Entry 7 by Amanida from Chertsey, Surrey United Kingdom on Wednesday, December 09, 2009
Lovely book, I very much enjoyed it. It was ideal because each story lasted a train journey! It was simply and beautifully written and contained some wonderful reflections on this specific painting, as well as on art in general.
