I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Berg. I have read 9 of her books, and I have rated 8 of them an 8**** or better, until today. This book was a huge disappointment to me.

Patty Ann Murphy is 36 years old, and her biological clock is ticking, louder by the second. Unfortunately Patty has no prospects on the horizon, and she has been in love with her best friend Ethan since sixth grade. In their twenties they tried to have a serious relationship, but ended their engagement when Ethan revealed he was gay. This has not stopped Patty from dreaming of a life with him, and virtually sabotaging every other relationship that comes along. So she enters into a deal with Ethan to be the father of her child, and to try to have a relationship. Of course this deal is doomed to failure and for me so was the book.

I didn’t care for the main character, Patty, because by 36 you would think she would have learned a few things, number one among them is you can’t turn a gay man straight. I also felt she was extremely immature, always daydreaming of the perfect life and the perfect home and the perfect family. Nothing in life is perfect. Too many times I wanted to close the book on such a naïve and shallow person. I read until the end, but I never warmed up to Patty and didn’t really care when the end came. I would have rated this book a two, but I related completely to the pregnancy, labor and delivery in the book, among the only parts that rang true.
