first published in 1934 this little gem of a book tells of a mother's humble life in a poor hamlet in pre-communist China, her hard work to provide for her children and old mother-in-law,when her husband abandons the family. An inspiring story of a mother's dedication to her family.

'They said he was a communist.'
'Where is he?' the mother cried.'Where is my youngest son?'
'We saw him this morning among the others,' came the answer. 'His hands were tied behind him and he was marching past the market-place. there was a long line of some twenty or thirty. The guards said they were communists who would be killed tomorrow.'

The book has arrived safely in my mailbox while I was away on a weekend trip, and I found it waiting when I came back home tonight. Very nice mail to come home to! :)
I haven't read anything by Pearl S. Buck yet, but I have heard good things about her books and have a goal of reading more Nobel prize winners, so I'm looking forward to picking up this book.
