From the Fantastic Fiction website:
"Deep in the jungles of Peru, the race of the century is underway. A race to locate a legendary Incan idol an idol carved out of a strange kind of stone. A stone which in the late 20th century could be used as the basis for a terrifying new weapon. The US Army wants it at any cost but they are not alone....
The only clue to the idol's final resting place lies in a 400yearold manuscript. Enter Professor William Race, a brilliant young linguist, who is unwittingly recruited to translate the manuscript and lead the Army team to the idol. And so begins the mission that will lead Race and his companions to a mysterious stone temple hidden in the foothills of the Andes. A temple seething with menace and danger. But it is only when the temple is opened that Race and his team discover that they have broken a golden rule: Some doors are meant to remain unopened.
From the author of Ice Station comes a sensational new adventure that will literally leave you gasping for air."
From Australian author Matthew Reilly.
Picked up from the Palace Backpacker's bookshelf.

Have just finished Hover Car Racer and this was available, look forward to another fast paced book.
Yet another page turner from Mr Reilly. I don' say that these are the best written books ever but he can certainly tell a fast paced story.
As with most adventure books this one is more than a little implausible, had a little feel of a "new" bond movie, one hero doing things that sometimes should just not be physically possible.
I took this with me on a bus trip to Melbourne and it took me less than a day to read, even though it is a decent sized book (688 pages) and I attribute this to the mind numbing boredom of the trip and the fact that this speeds along at quite a pace.
All in all it had some humourous moments with Professor William Race who is depicted as the team "nerd" being the reluctant hero and saving the world. But also some hideous ideas, like the super weapon that has been built for no other reason than to make sure that "we" have it before anyone else, but which will wipe out the entire planet. Too scarey to contemplate.

Haven't read any of young Matthew's books yet - they do sound like real page turners. I think my partner will also probably enjoy it.
Thanks very much for this one MadamMuck.
