Journal Entry 1 by hobbit from Surabaya, Jawa Timur Indonesia on Thursday, January 25, 2007

Excerpted from the book's foreword: The stories in this collection were written by participants of a workshop on Creative Writing and Drama in Nauru in 1990. Most participants were Nauruans. It was published by the USP (University of the South Pacific) Centre of Nauru. May these stories bring satisfaction to those who read them inspiration to those who write them joy and hope to those who hear them. May the readers, writers, and listeners be motivated to add to this collection to record, retell and recreate the richness of Nauruan folklore. May the future generations of Nauruans be inspired to build pride in this collection to capture the essence of hidden talents to explore the music, dances, paintings and many tales of a unique existence revealing the beauty of this small island nation. This book was a bit of an adventure to obtain. I found it on the publisher's website but they seemed to ship only to libraries and wholesalers. They listed some distributers, but the only one listed for the US didn't have it and wasn't willing to order it. I ended up ordering online from South Pacific Books in New Zealand, who shipped it to me quickly.

Journal Entry 2 by hobbit from Surabaya, Jawa Timur Indonesia on Thursday, January 25, 2007

This book was very short. The stories were okay but nothing special, I thought. I tend to prefer stories that are a bit longer. But I was happy to learn a bit more about Nauru, which I had never heard of until recently. Nauru seems to have been a difficult country to find authors from, so I'm forming a bookray to share with others who have international reading goals like the Olympic Challenge. Participants are: - Hendertuckian - US - ship anywhere
- Charlenemartel - Canada
- Piggeldy - Germany - prefer Europe but ship anywhere
- Sheepseeker - Germany - prefer Europe but ship anywhere
- katyan - Finland - prefer Europe but ship anywhere
- Alvhyttan - Sweden - prefer Europe but ship anywhere
- Purple-lilly - Australia - ship anywhere
The last person is welcome to start a new ring or ray, wild release, or do whatever they like with the book.

I went to the Post Office yesterday and started this on its way. Sorry for the delay. It's so small, though, that I expect it will move quickly.

The stories are short and almost disjointed. but after reading a little of the history of Nauru, I'm not suprised by the feelings of separtion. Send this on to the next person in the bookring.

Stories from Nauru was an intruiging little book. These are simple and yet vivid little stories which vary from giving a glimpse into the past and mythical side of Nauru, through to the present problems they have. I loved seeing all of it and hope that we see much more from this place. Thanks for sharing such a little gem. PM'ing the next person in line to get this one moving again.

Journal Entry 8 by Piggeldy from Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Friday, March 16, 2007
This nice little book arrived here safely - and as I forgot my other book at my parents' home, I read it on my way home ;-) Some stories are really nice. I normally don't like short stories that much, but those about Nauruan life and (kind of) myths are very interesting (e.g. the one about the rain-making girl or the man who remembers Nauru in the old times). I wasn't aware that Germany once was quite influencing in Nauru. The book will travel on next week, just need Sheepseeker's address ;-) Edit: Sheepseeker is on holiday until March 24, so the book will rest here a few days longer.

I rather liked these stories. Unlike several other from th Pacific region I found them easy to understand for our western thinking (whatever that is ;-). And I was also surprised, that Nauru once was german territory - unbelievable! Thanks for sharing the book and obtaining it in the first place! I already PMed katyan...

I really enjoyed reading this small book. Even the authors of the stories were not "real" writers, their stories were so Human and so Touching. It was lovely to read them. It was also curious to notice again the influence of a white man and Christianity, not everything coming from the west is good. Or, the same truths might have been discorvered before us, they're just showing a different aspect of the truth in different corners of the world.

Journal Entry 14 by Alvhyttan from Nora, Västmanland Sweden on Thursday, May 03, 2007

Those stories were all very different from each other. When I read this little book I thought about the people that took part in this workshop on Creative Writing and Drama, they all had something they wanted to tell. I wish everyone had the opportunity to do a workshop like that. Some of those stories are quite good, but I appreciate this book mostly because I learned a lot of things about Nauru. I will send this book to Purple-lilly as soon as I have her address. Sent May 9 and Purple-lilly will have it in about a week.
