From the back cover:

'A naive young secretary forsakes Cleveland for San Francisco, tumbling headlong into a brave new world of laundromat Lotharios, cut throat debutantes, and Jockey Shorts dance contests. The saga that ensues is manic, tawdry, touching, and outrageous - unmistakably the handiwork of Armistead Maupin.'

Brilliantly funny and evocative...I fell madly in love with Armistead Maupin's wonderful portrayal of livin' and a-lovin' in 1970's San Francisco. The characters are larger-than-life, yet still very believable (and extremely likeable), the dialogue is fiercely witty, and San Francisco (playing itself & stealing the show) comes all decked out to disco in gloriously vivid 70's technicolour, glitterballs and all...;O)

Kim and I were sharing our 'Tales of the City' stories the other day, how we'd originally discovered the series (of which is the first book)...so here's mine.

I picked up the first three books in a fab second-hand book shop for a trip abroad (think I'd seen a couple of episodes of the first series on telly and knew I was on to a good thing!)...finished them in a couple of days and was desperate to get back into this country and get my hands on the rest. The fact that I was on my honeymoon should really have set a few alarm bells ringing...

Anyhow, the books are still with me, the husband is a delightfully dim and distant memory, so I think I did pretty well out of the whole business, really...;O)

Happy days!

Now, where was I? Okay...I have picked up a shiny and nice new copy of this ab fab book, to send off as a bookray...as this one will keep on travelling until it falls to well-loved bits, if you'd like to be included at any time please PM me or drop me a line through my homepage and I'll add you to the list here.

***Please do show consideration to the bookcrossers patiently waiting to read the book after you. Wherever possible, I would ask that you endeavour to get it back on the road again within a couple of weeks of receiving it. If your turn is rapidly approaching and you find that you're up to your armpits in rings and rays, do drop me a line and we'll work something out.***

I got this book in the mail today! *yay*

I read this book a while back and loved it. When I went to reread it recently, I was told by library staff that it was borrowed in 1989 and hadn't been returned :(. I'm really looking forward to reading it again.

*sigh* It wasn't as good as I remembered, but I guess that often happens. Books you read and movies you watched in your childhood don't measure up to your fond memories of them when you revisit them years later.

However, I'm glad I was given the chance to reread this novel. Thanks!

It's on its way to Lisaxiii :D

I love this book every time I read it. I was only a kid in the 70's, but I did grow up near San Francisco. It's always fun to read a story when you recognize the people and places they're talking about.

Sending on to MarthaMinx as soon as I get her address :-) (Constant-Reader said to skip her on the list.)

Oooh, this one looks good. :) Received this weekend, along with another bookray book, but I feel sure I will finish it fairly soon and send it back out on it's continued journey. And to think that Maupin was raised nearby in Raleigh, N.C.! I'm looking forward to it-- thanks for sharing, lucycat!

This was the first time I'd read this book, or anything by Maupin, and I must say, it was easy to get hooked on!

I was drawn pretty quickly into the lives of each of the characters, who I found endearing and engaging in their own ways. I also loved the quick wit, and the subtle unraveling of the story line. Plus, just reading about bustling San Fran during that time period was fun-- Oh to be young, single, and living the big city life!

Thanks lucycat, for introducing me to a great series that I am sure to read more of!

Mailed to caligula03, the next person on the list, today. Enjoy!

This book arrived safe and sound today. I have quite a pile of rings and rays to read so bear with me please. You can follow my progress on my bookshelf.

That said, I'm eager to read this book. I currently live within spitting distance of "The City" and used to visit relatives in "The City" in the 1970s (back when I lived in Southern California). It will be fun to compare and contrast reality, memory and the book's descriptions. :)

10 out of 10

I started this book over the weekend to take a break from all the vampire books I'm reading. I thought at first this book must have been written in the early 1990s because the descriptions of San Francisco are spot on. I was surprised to see that this book dates to 1978! My goodness -- the City hasn't changed! I'm laughing my ass off at this book. I'll have to read the other books by this author. It is so much fun to read a novel about a city that is just minutes away. :)

I would give this book a 20 if I could. The City and Peninsula haven't changed from when this book was published. The book might have well been published last year because so much of what is described is still around and still as wacky. The wonderful variety and types of characters portrayed in this book haven't changed either. The ending was quite a kicker!

As it hasn't been heard from for over a year, I'm declaring this one well and truly deceased - sorry to all those still waiting to read this, I hope you get your hands on a copy soon.

It's such a shame that there have to be a few people who spoil the fun for everyone else... :O(
