Journal Entry 1 by luckaye from Logan City, Queensland Australia on Sunday, September 09, 2007
Amazon.com Connie Willis labored five years on this story of a history student in 2048 who is transported to an English village in the 14th century. The student arrives mistakenly on the eve of the onset of the Black Plague. Her dealings with a family of "contemps" in 1348 and with her historian cohorts lead to complications as the book unfolds into a surprisingly dark, deep conclusion. The book, which won Hugo and Nebula Awards, draws upon Willis' understanding of the universalities of human nature to explore the ageless issues of evil, suffering and the indomitable will of the human spirit.

Great book, though it made me giggle at the lack of mobile phones - I guess the story wouldn't work so well if you were able to contact everyone no matter where they were! LOL

Enjoyable read although I thought it was a little drawn out. Also I felt the ending was too neatly wrapped up. Sending this book on to catsalive as a hitchhiker with another book.

Journal Entry 8 by jennymidget from Bellbowrie, Queensland Australia on Sunday, July 13, 2008
Oh, this book was absolutely WOW - I can see why it won awards! Terribly terribly epic, terribly terribly sad and shocking and frustrating... Connie Willis has a winner here. I too was a bit disappointed at the "neat" ending (though relieved I'll admit!) but don't let that spoil a ripsnorter of a story! Off to Freelunch via BookObsessed relays...

Journal Entry 10 by freehand from Cairns, Queensland Australia on Sunday, June 07, 2009
A very interesting tale. It took me a while to become immersed, but once I was there I found it hard to put it down. So different, contemplating life in other times or even in colder climates without electricity.
