"When a talented artist sets out for a weekend trip, she can't imagine that she'll find the truth about her own life." from back cover

At first this did not seem like an Atwood novel and I read and waited for it. It finally "surfaced." So many people are too busy to stop and see what they are doing and how they change their surroundings and how quick they accept what is, now. I identified with this girl in so many ways. I too sit and think about what appears to be a natural acceptable cruelty in this world towards nature and anyone that isn't like you. And even though I didn't like being stereotyped as the "Americans" much of what she said is true about us.
We have been placed, it seems, in quite a quandary, us humans. And this is where this girl was going around in circles. What seems the right way that you know in your heart and what the world expects. I was glad when she donned her clothes and said, "I reenter my own time." pg 229 She had a breakdown of sorts but got it back together. She didn't give up and cave. That's all you can do.

Thank you, gategrl. This looks like an interesting book. I'm tempted to read it before donating it to the 1001-library.

This young woman wants to return to the Ontario wilderness where she grew up in unusual circumstances. Her father who had been living in a remote cabin on a lake has disappeared and she is seeking him somehow. She needs to get there somehow, so she arranges for her current boyfriend and another couple to go with her. The "weekend" actually extends to more than a week.

Nothing much seems to happen which is often is the case in a remote cabin away from technological entertainment. I knew something was up but was never enlightened. At the end of the book, things grow chaotic and more interesting. When I was finished with the book, I was still clueless. The ending leaves you hanging as to what direction this young woman's life will take.

While reading the book, I was open to a lot of possibilities as to what was happening: secret government plots and experiments, animals taking the form of humans, humans taking the form of animals, alien visitors residing in the Canadian wilderness, time travel. On the other hand, maybe this young woman was merely crazy and completely alienated from fellow human beings.
