September Meet Up
Kept picking this one up and meaning to read it and then putting it down again! Returning to BX meet up - maybe another time!
I picked this up at the Edinburgh Bookcrossing Meet-up tonight thinking it was time to give Jasper Fforde another shot. So many readers I know love his work and so far the only book of his I attempted irritated me immensely. The “wildly hilarious”, use of puns, (spare me) and his “jovial whimsy”, (childish?) and all the literary allusions I just didn’t get left me out in the cold… So I’m moved to giving his work another go as my chums have were horrified. What, you don’t love the satire, puns and jovial whimsy. Clearly you have no sense of humour! So sue me, sigh! Here I go though, time to see if I can discover what all the fuss is about!
ADDED - 16 March 2010: Back home after releasing this in Aberdeen… I did the thing I am challenged by I gave up reading this… so here are some notes I made with the book in hand earlier in the month.
Oh crumbs, taking a peak a few days after picking this up and I’m irritated by the end of the second sentence… I don’t think this bodes well…
I guess it was supposed to be funny. Hmmmm…
This seems really heavy handed, clunky and reference ridden humour to me and if you don’t enjoy the same sense of humour and don’t get the references the labour intensive business of cutting through this verbiage to the plot is tedious. What am I wittering on about. This verbiage is totally enmeshed with the plot. Oh, dear… and I had thought, hey nursery rhymes I know them, I ought to be able to get more out of this but I’m beginning to wonder?
This is a journey thing isn’t it? I’m supposed to be relishing the journey aren’t I? Instead of announcing to my computer, “Yes well, that’s all very well but where on earth is this journey supposed to be taking me?” Hmmmm…
rainbow3 didn't get a chance to do release notes for this one before visiting but left this for the shelf after a mini meetup.
12/3/10
Mr Inver and I had a visit to the cinema. Had time for a drink and a browse over the shelf and he brought this one home to read.

Henrietta "Goldilocks" Hatchett, ace reporter, goes missing after inteviewing a prize-cucumber grower (who is blown up soon after). The last ones to see her alive are the Three Bears. DCI Jack Spratt, of the Reading Nursery Crimes Division, is assigned to investigate.
In an unrelated (?) incident, the Gingerbreadman (psycopath, genius, murderer & biscuit) escapes. However, in Plot Twist #40, Jack is removed from the case. Can he catch Ginge, find out why the cucumbers are blowing up with the force of a small atomic bomb, work out why the bears' porridge is at different temperatures (even though poured at the same time) and what bears REALLY do in the woods?!
Quite enjoyed this one: however, it's a wee bit heavy-handed on the names/allusions, and generally tries a bit too hard. However, it's saved by a few brilliant moments (An MP introducing a parliamentary Bill called "The Right To Arm Bears" was my favourite) and a plot that remains devious to the end.
Oh yeah, it's got an Austin Allegro in it. Class car...could only be bettered as a plot twist by a Moggie Marina.
Mr Inver.

Many thanks for this, Diane! I think I'll reserve it to take along to the Uncon in October, as Jasper Fforde will be there, so I'm sure someone will pick this up and it will continue its travels :-)

Picked it up at the Salzkammergut meeting in Austria. The book was hanging around at the book table for ages, nobody seemed interested in it... so I took pity... I know it already, but will take it with me back to Germany and will find a new home for it.
