Journal Entry 1 by dark-draco from Ledbury, Herefordshire United Kingdom on Saturday, January 13, 2007
I have always loved this story and always identified with Maggie Tulliver, torn always between doing her duty and following her wild wishes. I'm reluctantly releasing it as I'm frantically trying to make some room in a house packed with bookshelves!! The story - The Tulliver family are well to do millers. Maggie and Tom, brother and sister, almost inseparable as they grow up together. But Mr. Tulliver's generous soul soon lands them into trouble - bankrupt and working for the very man their father hates. As she learns to cope in their reduced circumstances, Maggie fights constantly against her temptations, refusing to take any joy in life. Then Phillip Wakem falls in love with her, the son of their sworn enemy, and although innocent, Tom takes the harsh decision to disown her. So her life gets harder and harder, until she in turn falls in love...with the fiancee of her beloved cousin! This is such a tragic story. Everytime something goes right in Maggie's world, something else happens to bring it crashing back down. And no matter that I know the ending, it always comes as a shock and I end up crying!! Despite that, I do love it and I hope that you will get as much enjoyment out of reading it as I have. Happy Reading

Journal Entry 4 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Saturday, July 12, 2008
Given that it is over a month since I read this, I'm not in a position to make a very cogent journal entry - sorry. I know I enjoyed it even more than I thought I would, and got through the five and a half hundred pages in half a working week. Having seen only the very final scenes of a television adaptation some years ago, I knew the end, but it was very interesting seeing how that came to pass. More George Eliot to read methinks. Will revise my wishlist when I've caught up with JEs. Thank you again dark-draco.
