An unusual book. Took me a while to get into it and then, of course, I had to continue if only to find out what the mystery was with the main character's mother. The book had a happy ending though and I'm a sucker for those.

8 out of 10

Read within the year, so not too bad I suppose!

Like Tanamo, I had to keep reading this to find the identity of Dena's mother, but I did get into it quite quickly. Most of the he characters, even the minor ones, were painted clearly enough for me to see and hear, only Gerry seemed a bit far off. Someone suggest who should play him in a film and maybe I'll get a handle on him.

Some bits made me smile (Neighbour Dorothy's homely broadcasts, Gerry's encounter with the Highway Patrolman), some bits were touching (Dena eating lobster for the first time), and other bits just, I suppose the best way to describe it is, made sense - either in the context of the tale or in terms of the homespun wisdom that I gather from the reviews on the inside characterises Flagg's novels. Given some of the big themes it deals with, it could have been very preachy or patronising, but instead it left me at least with warm fuzzies.
