Louise Shaffer portrays the racial confinements of the Deep south through the eyes of three with a secret to hide.

The main characters Peggy, Lil'Bit and Dr Maggie become intertwined from childhood and live their lives as each others companions. Each has had something missing from their life and their only way to make up for this is to try and steer others. Be it financially or emotionally.

The book shows how strong the friendship between these three white women is, along with a twisted mis-carriage of justice and a secret to hide.

The lost character of the book is a young woman by the name of Laurel, who has lived her miserable existance in false pretence.
Who caused this and who can change it? The three Miss Margarets.

Each character feels fear due to an incident that happened years before and changed the course of time for both the whites and the blacks in this book.

Very enjoyable

Journal Entry 4 by LindyB28 from Acocks Green, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, April 2, 2007
Posted by LyzzyBee: received with thanks by LindyB28. This looks a wonderful American read. I'm looking forward to it.

Journal Entry 5 by LindyB28 from Acocks Green, West Midlands United Kingdom on Friday, April 6, 2007
This book uses the familiar style of US Southern femle novels to hide a darker heart. It is thus reminiscent at once of Fannie Flagg and John Berendt's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil".

Passed to LyzzyBee who cannot of course resist it...

Journal Entry 6 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Friday, April 6, 2007
Picked up from LindyB28 once she'd finished it, and it somehow JUMPED onto my TBR...

Journal Entry 7 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, July 9, 2007
I enjoyed this Southern tale, particularly the interweaving of the three Miss Margarets' friendship and lovely Laurel, a full rounded and complex character. There *were* a few what I would call stereotypes or cliches, but this is more to do with the fact that I have read a LOT of southern small-town fiction - it's more commonalities. A good read.

Dangling the lure in front of Heaven-Ali/Anglersrest/Scotsbookie. Who will bite first...?

Sorry Lyzzybee that I didn't journal it when I got it.
On my first attempt to read this book I gave it up after a couple of pages. I must admit that it must just have been me at the time. After reading another ring I went back to this and got into it straight away and found that I didn't want to put it down until I found out all what had happened in the past. I will be passing it onto Purplerosebud next week.

Sorry I've had this a few days and haven't done a journal. I am looking forward to reading it but I have a couple of other book I must read first.

Journal Entry 12 by purplerosebud from Petersfield, Hampshire United Kingdom on Saturday, March 8, 2008
I've just finishd reading this book and enjoyed it very much. The story jumps about quite a bit with rather a lot of characters, both black and white, spanning several generations. I did get confused from time to time remebering how some of them related to the plot but it didn't matter, I just kept on reading and it all came back. Lots to keep you interested in what was coming next and an ending that I found quite satisfying.

Many thanks for sharing Lyzzybee and giving me the chance to read it.

Will be sending it on to Scotsbookie in a few days time.

Journal Entry 13 by scotsbookie from Peebles, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, March 13, 2008
Arrived safely this morning, thank you PurpleRosebud & thank you also for the lovely Chinese bookmark. I'm i a bit of a ring crisis at the moment but should get to this within the month.

A thoroughly enjoyable read. I enjoyed the way the narrative told the tale in a series of flashbacks & using differing points of view. Laurel's description of her 9th birthday was moving & something that has stayed with me for the couple of days since I finished the book.

I have Cross-patch's address so will get this in the post asap as I've had it too long already.

Thank you scotsbookie, the book arrived safely. Sadly it arrived with an avalanche of Baudelaire children episodes (Lemony Snicket) so I am afraid I will be a little slow getting to the Margarets - but I may just cheat!!

As always, a massive thank you to LyzzyBee - it looks like another good one.

Journal Entry 17 by wingCross-patchwing from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Sunday, June 8, 2008
I took my time over this, I admit; it was savoured in small tiny pieces ( I enjoyed the choppy narrative for this). Louise Shaffer is another author to look out for and to be added to the ever growing list of 'good ones'.

I am waiting to hear from Anglersrest and shall post it on as soon as I get the green light.

9 June - on its way.

Waiting for me, with two other rings when I returned from a conference and hols in Scotland last night. Position # 3 on TBR mountain!

Journal Entry 19 by AnglersRest from Teignmouth, Devon United Kingdom on Sunday, August 3, 2008
This is rather a "busy" book, with lots of characters, but essentially it is a story of friendship, and a coming to terms with a past chain of events.Certain scenes from the book have remained with me for a few days.

I've been in touch with Blundery, and as soon as I have an address this will be across the pond!

Journal Entry 20 by Blundery on Tuesday, August 12, 2008
This arrived safe and sound today, thanks to anglersrest for offering to post O/S. I am really looking forward to reading this one, it has jumped the queue and is next on my TBR pile :-)

Journal Entry 21 by Blundery on Friday, September 26, 2008
Wow, what a great story. I loved the way it unfolded in small bite sized pieces. I did struggle initially a little with who's who, and by chapter 11 I had sketched a sort of family tree on a piece of scrap paper to work out where the characters had been and how they were connected. In saying that, it wasn't a hard read - I think it was mostly because I was reading in bed at night and I was really tired so the characters weren't sticking like the usually would.

This story really made me think about the power of ones reputation, and how one decision can affect so many different things for so many people.

Thank you so much LyzzyBee for putting this up for a ray, I will rest it on my available shelf for a little while and then I will ray it out for others to enjoy.

Oh, and I am still trying to figure out what the relevence was of those things in the box that belonged to Laurels mother - I might have missed something there.

Journal Entry 22 by Blundery on Tuesday, December 16, 2008
I put this book into a virtual book box and it was snapped up by another avid reader so it's off to the other side of the continent for someone else to enjoy.

I have also just acquired "the ladies of garrison Gardens" which follows on the story of the Miss Margarets so anyone interested in joining a ring for the book once I am finished, pm me and I will put you on the list.

I enjoyed reading this book, it was a little hard to keep track of who was related to who but once I worked that out I found it quite enjoyable.

Will be posting this on to ladyindigo tomorrow.

Journal Entry 26 by wingLadyIndigowing from Orange, New South Wales Australia on Wednesday, April 1, 2009
it was an interesting read - sorry it has taken me a little while to journal - when i finished it i couldn't access bc site for about 6 weeks...sigh

secrets have a way of catching up with us no matter how much we try to keep them hidden, and we pay a price for reputations and the keeping up of appearances

yes there were lots of characters, but i found that not all three miss margarets were fully developed in the book (as characters)

thanks for sharing
;-)

I enjoyed this book, I haven't read a Southern American book for quite a few years. The chopping and changing of characters and time certainly kept me interested. It really highlights how our actions create a ripple effect.
I would love to read The Ladies of Garrison Gardens as well.
