This book is going to Rhonder in Canada in an M-bag. I hope she has time to write a synopsis.
Thank you lovemylife!
"Beattie's most comic - indeed her first satiric - work to date ... Much of the book's authenticity derives from the accretion of felt detail - a Beattie trademark. She captures 1984 Vermont with right-on references to Cyndi Lauper, Horchow catalogs, and 'pre-Cabbage Patch' Coleco."

This book reminds why I had a hard time finding a good book to read in the 80's and had to resort to books written in earlier decades. Although the writing is good and easy to read, the story itself was not interesting or fun to read. I would say that the author is trying to write a pseudo-existentialist book like the Colette books that I had to read while taking French. But the French are quite sophisticated and handle a meaningless life with much more style than idiot Americans of the 1980's described in this book who hadn't the slightest idea about how to get any enjoyment out of life, and the more privileged you are, the more inept you are at enjoying life.
Sociologically speaking, I would say that the values that were cast out during the social revolution that was going in the 1960's resulted in spineless idiots such as the ones described in this book who did not know how to value much of anything. In spite of all this, America seems to have gotten itself back on track, so to speak, with valuing the important things of life or even valuing things that it shouldn't value which I think is preferable to the moral lethargy pictured in this book.
