Book Description from Amazon.com:
FROM THE ICE. . . A mammoth, flash frozen in solid ice 10,000 years ago is brought to the surface by a team of scientists. An act of sabotage frees the giant from its icy tomb and reveals the secret held inside. OUT OF THE MAMMOTH. . . The body of an ancient woman, cloaked in furs, slides out of the mammoth's belly. But it is not the woman that holds the team's attention...it is the object she is clutching...a device created by an advanced civilization. THE HUNT IS ON. . . The device is accidentally activated, summoning forces who seek its destruction. It is the key to mankind's salvation and freedom from the men behind the curtain, pulling the strings and leading humanity towards destruction.
Update 1/13/07: This book has some really great reviews at Amazon.com. Based on the 5-star reviews and the premise about excavating a woolly mammoth, I went ahead and purchased the book, hoping it would really be a great adventure yarn -- especially since it was recommended by James Rollins. As I read the book, however, the story for me devolved into a comic-bookish sci-fi story complete with opposing sets of aliens! I believe the author was a comic book writer and I think this is very evident. I did enjoy the setup for the story and the first parts about the mammoth excavation. And the story does have a lot of action but I really can’t recommend it.
Another thing that was distracting to me was the numerous typos in the text. This book was published by a new publishing house (Breakneck Books) and this could be the reason for the errors.
I have set up a bookray for this and am interested to see how others rate the book, especially after the many glowing reviews at Amazon.

I just got it in the mail! Thanks, perryfran, for the ring and for sending!
Really, the comic-book feeling never left me... And it's a long way to go until I could come up with a possible comparison with James Rollins! A few ideas are interesting, but the author never follows-up; he has to many ideas packed in this story - not one develops as it could... And a lot of the plot is much too transparent. But you cannot read only the best authors; you have to try and find better ones, even if that means to read those that are not so good...

Will start to read it this tomorrow.

This book is easy to read, as you have the feeling to look at a B rated sci-fi action movie. Unfortunately, it doesn't make a good book!
"Raising the Past" has been posted today to krin511.

Arrived today - I'll probably start it next week if not sooner.
I enjoyed this book - a good action story set in the Arctic. Yes, the plot was thin at times (like the ice!), but it kept my interest.
Reserved for genielady - will mail by Saturday.

The book arrived Friday and my husband has finished it already. He didn't recommend it to me, so I'll pass it along to the next person. After reading James Rollins, hubby said it was no comparison.

Re'cvd today. Looks interesting..thanks for sharing!!!
I thought this one was okay. Somewhat intersting, but somewhat silly...I don't know. I liked it, just didn't love it. :) I am intrigued by his other book "The Didymus Contingency", however...anyone read that one?
Thanks so much for sharing!!! Will get out in the next day or two.

Received in the mail today. Thanks so much. Will read it soon.
Pretty good book. Interesting premise, but I think he got a little carried away. Now on it's way to sgscarcliff.
Picked up today, I will read and send it on its way.
This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.
All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.
It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
