Thank you zzz!! I borrowed this book from someone a while back, but had to return it before I had finished it, so am looking forward to finishing it this time!
I have had this book far too long without reading it, so it is now off to another BookCrosser who has it on her wishlist.
Thanks camis! I'm happy to get this wishlist book and I see that zzz recommends it as well - sweet!
I finished this about 4 weeks ago and am behind in writing my review. I thought it was well-written and a good read. I usually don't care for stories that keep switching the point of view but in this case it made a lot of sense and gave us extra insight into the characters. I thought there was a little too much background on Queenie and Bernard. I liked the ending although it was probably unlikely. Overall, very worthwhile to read and I can see why it won an Orange prize.
Sending this on to bookpatch
Looks interesting! Thanks very much.
Loosely paraphrased from the inside dust cover: "Small Island explores a point in England's past when the country began to change, handling weighty themes of empire, prejudice, war, and love through the story of Queenie Bligh, husband Bernard, and their house lodgers Gilbert and Hortense, newly arrived hopefuls from Jamaica."
Lots of great characters in this book (Gilbert being my favorite). I loved that the author gave us complete pictures of each, granting them with virtues and flaws, and how their virtues and flaws played off of each other. Well done!
