I finally managed to read it through. Not bad but a bit disjointed and not as engaging as I would like. I found it hard to empathise much with Mary, mostly because her circumstances improved so dramatically so quickly, and as for Leo he failed to make much of an impression on me at all. The murders were more or less irrelevant to the plot and you never felt Mary was in peril. Bean was a great character but he and the thug junkie Hob were the only ones to bring the story to life for me. All in all the author just kept too much information from me to make me care too much about what was going to happen. A few implausibilities at the end did not help much either.
