Journal Entry 6 by purple-pixie from Nuneaton, Warwickshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, January 22, 2008
An undeniably cleverly written book with many funny parts, but I found myself getting a little bit lost in some of the twists in the plot. Certainly not the worst book I've read recently, but I won't be going out of my way to find more of Coe's books.

Arrived today. Had been on my wish list for a little while before purple-pixie very generously offered it to me out of the blue. Thanks a lot for that. Hope you enjoy 'Them'.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's an intriguingly plotted little number with a relatively large cast of characters, most of whom are very well fleshed out. It centres on a wealthy family, the members of which seem to be quite horrible people. The main character finds himself researching a history of this family, and in doing so uncovers more and more evidence of their quite staggering avarice. There are plenty of laughs along the way and a little bit of social and political commentary. I'd say it is well worth a read.
That said, if you didn't enjoy this, I would still recommend Jonathan Coe's, 'The Rotter's Club'. That really is an excellent novel.
