The Romantic tells the story of Louise Kirk, whose former beauty queen mother disappears when she is nine years old, leaving Louise in the care of her emotionally detached father. The novel moves backwards and forwards in time, chronicling Louise's high school years and young adulthood in Toronto. I liked reading this novel, particularly its exploration of how Louise manages to repeat her childhood experience of abandonment in her adult relationships. But I didn't find it as remarkable as I expected, particularly given its 2003 Booker nomination. Recommended as a good summer read.

I left this book on top of a newspaper box at the Esso Station when we stopped in Keremeos to pick up a sandwich from Subway. When we came back outside 30 minutes later, the book was gone. Best wishes and happy reading to whomever picked it up!
