Reviewed favourably in a recent Globe & Mail "Books" section, Planet Reese tells the story of the title character, a former Greenpeace crusader turned for-profit telemarketing expert who is slowly being driven crazy by the environmental and social bankruptcy of the 21st century. Reese's relentless intensity reminded me of others I've known over the years whose inability (or unwillingness) to detach from the painful details of environmental degradation, political oppression, third world poverty, human rights violations, etc. would seem more noble if it wasn't so rooted in personal pathology. A sad tale, an occasionally tiresome read, with a very sweet ending.
