Purchased at a local MonsterBookstore when I was supposed to be buying a birthday present for my Mom (oops). Reviewed favourably earlier this year in the Globe & Mail's books section.

I was pretty disappointed in this book. It was presented (on both the back cover and in the review I read) as a Grisham-style legal thriller set in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a back story related to the destruction of Africville, an African-Canadian settlement on the outskirts of Halifax which was forcibly torn down by municipal authorities in the early 1960s. While I had hoped the novel would bring to life some of the culture and history of Africville (a non-fiction book about which would no doubt be fascinating), it instead dwelled excessively on the neurotic family history of the main character, a white judge who makes an entirely predictable discovery about his real ancestry near the end of the novel. It took me more than two weeks to get through Reparations, as I found the book's plot cliches and slow forward movement made for a bit of a slog. Better luck to the next reader.
