Purchased at a local MonsterBookstore when I was supposed to be buying a birthday present for my Mom (oops - at least I bought her a copy, too). By the author of Cloud Atlas

I really enjoyed this story of a year in the life of thirteen year old Jason Taylor, a middle-class kid living in Thatcher-era England struggling to survive the breakdown of his parents' marriage, bullying by neighbourhood kids, and a speech impediment apparently exacerbated by all this stress. Others have been disappointed by the book, and a recurrent criticism is that Jason seems too adult, too self-aware and insightful to come across as an authentic kid. I noticed that, but it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the novel.

I've passed this one along to my colleague Megan, to read and pass along whenever she's ready.
