"I can't imagine how even the most brilliant author could describe to a stranger what it's like to take your life's journey with your sister attached to your head." -- Ruby, in The Girls The Girls tells the story of Rose and Ruby, conjoined twins born in 1974 in the fictional town of Leaford, Ontario (pop. 5302) fused at the skull -- a condition known as "craniopagus" twins. As the novel begins The Girls (as they are known around town) are approaching their 30th birthday, and facing a not unforeseen medical crisis. The novel, written in the first person with Rose and Ruby alternating as narrators, explores their experiences as sisters and as individuals, leading the reader through the first decades of their lives in rural Ontario, along with a brief journey to their uncle's birthplace in Slovakia. I'm taking The Girls to give to my sister-in-law in Courtenay, British Columbia, who I think will enjoy it.
