A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian tells the story of Ukrainian-English sociologist Nadezhda "Nadia" Mayevskyj and her widower father Nikolai, who at eighty-six takes up with a thirty-something Russian national, Valentina, whose interest in him has little to do with love and everything to do with her desire for a British passport. Tractors explores the differences between the generations, relationships between sisters, the changing global landscape and the way families adjust and normalize following trauma in earlier life. This is a funny, thoughtful, insightful book which I thoroughly enjoyed, right up to the last wonderful image. Highly recommended. A Short History was longlisted for both the 2005 Orange Prize for Fiction and the Booker Prize.

Set aside for my Mom, who I think will enjoy it.
