One of those books where you wonder if the critics were reading a different book from the one you have in your hand... I flipped through it and did not like it at all depsite Ishiguro's reputation.

First off: I didn't read the critics. No idea what they thought. I found this to be a very disturbing book. I don't particularly care for this writing style, jumping back and forth in the story, all the while referring to things that haven't happened yet and sounding like it's something you should already know. That didn't lessen the impact of the story, though. I don't want to give too much away here, so I'll sound enigmatic:

It's a thought-provoking book and very sad. The fact that the main characters never even challenenged their destiny makes it even worse. I finished the book feeling that I read about a life wasted. As interesting and scary as the premises of the book were, so many questions were left open. And I thought that to be a weakness of the book: The story wasn't strong enough to justify the vagueness of the dystopia.
