Read and enjoyed this over the Christmas holidays. It is a nice undemanding read which goes well with relaxing at home with the odd glass of wine.

Now on its way to bookmanu in Portugal.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I'm a great fan of Bill Bryson and was once again entertained by his humourous insights on life. This time life in America after not having lived there for twenty years.

I read several of Bryson's books in quick succession a few years ago and was left feeling rather irritated with his style. I'm pleased to say that this book left me keen on his style again. I loved his comments on Americans and the English and could recognise the humour in both, as well as his affection for both. A nice one to read in fits and starts.

Sorry it has taken so long. I'm in the process of buying a house and it seems to be draining all of my time. I will get it sent on this week.

10 out of 10

Oh my goodness, how I love Bill Bryson! This was such a funny read, yet it managed to bring tears of homesickness to my eyes more than once. As a transplanted New England girl, I can really relate to Brysons books, but this one has been my favourite so far. He manages to tease and take the mick out of both the Americans and Brits in such a gentle, funloving, good humoured way. I really must get a copy for my PC...

Thank you so much for sharing this one, Annodyne :) I have PM'ed Molekilby for his address and will post it out as soon as I hear back!

When I read the back cover, this book sounded familiar, and yep a little research and it turns out this is the American version of Notes From A Big Country which I have on my shelf. Undeterred I started to read it and some passages were familiar to me. You guessed it I've already read my copy. Nevertheless I continued to the end, I haven't read Bill for such a while it was refreshing to have his sense of humour with me over the weekend.

As this volume is short articles spread over 18 months in a British newspaper there did seem to be some rework of material in quite a number. I preferred the ones that compared US life to British life and was surprised how much has changed in such a short space of time. Much of Britain now taking up American habits. There were however some very poignant stories that bring home the fact that this book was published in the 20th Century.

Thanks to Cinnamon-Girl for organizing, Annodyne for stepping in. This will be sent as soon as I have an address. I should of course release the other book, but it happens to be a signed copy and therefore I'm having a crisis of conscience. I'm sure I'll relent eventually.

ETA: Sent to Australia 16th August 2007. Babyimran asked to be skipped.

From Alice's big box of books

I enjoyed this collection of short newspaper articles on Bryson's discoveries on his return to America after twenty years away. Each chapter is a of a short manageable length as it was first written as a newspaper article. He covers such topics as why no-one walks in the US, why cars without cup-holders are unsaleable, disappearing pleasures such as drive-in movie theatres, diners, road trips and post-offices.
