8 out of 10

Picked this one up at Meetup (bookdrinks!) this week. I have read it before (and was a bit puzzled by bits, and found other bits completely fascinating), but grabbed it because it was an orphan on a terribly wet and windy autumn night and also because it is one of those darned "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" (no pressure) books. So I'll probably offer it up as a ray.

The scene that sticks most in my mind is one where they're mocking up a large scale disaster in the town, and everyone's pitching in, either as victims or as emergency crew. As I said, puzzling and fascinating. And, being DeLillo, a great look at modern America.

Journal Entry 4 by Tubereader from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Sunday, May 04, 2008

This book has not been rated.

The book has arrived safely. I have a couple of rings ahead of it, but shouldn't take me too long to get to this one.

Thanks a lot to tqd for sharing!

Journal Entry 5 by Tubereader from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Friday, June 06, 2008

This book has not been rated.

First of all, I wanted to apologise for keeping the book for so long on my TBR. The three rings that came just before this one were for very long and deep books so it has taken me much longer than expected to get through them but I am finally done. So I will start reading this book today. As I have an exam tomorrow all day and family visiting this weekend, I think I will only finish the book by the end of next week, but it should not take me longer than that.

I'll update this entry and PM the next participant when I am half way through the book and the end is in sight.

Thanks tqd for sharing!

UPDATE 9 JUNE: I'm really enjoying this book. Have read half of it already and I am quite liking it. I cannot really say why in particular, but I am finding it very enjoyable (and easy to read). I think I will be done in a couple of day so I have PMed ekranda for their address so I can pass the book on as soon as I am done.

7 out of 10

I've now finished the book.

I must say that I liked it a lot, except for the last chapter. I am not really sure how it fits into the story and it left me feeling like something was missing. Otherwise, I am not really sure why it is exactly that I liked it, I think it is because it is written in a way that it feels that you are just watching that family and you are part of the story.

I have ekranda's address now so I'll try to post the book to her tomorrow. Thanks again to tqd for sharing, I really enjoyed this book!!

7 out of 10

I’m not 100% sure how I felt about this book. It had some humorous scenes within it which were of a fairly dark nature but I felt that it didn't have much going on for much of the time until something large happened within it. I didn't get hooked on it - that might be more of an indication of some of the books that I’ve read lately though, such as the book thief - a book I couldn't put down but was full of tension and the characters within it absorbed me....this book I’m not so sure that it did.....maybe the characters in this book were all a bit too odd? I kept having to put it down and actually, thinking about it now, I kept falling asleep whilst reading it....no matter what time of day!

It's got some interesting elements but it's not what I would call a gripping tale.

I hope Cally-C gets more enjoyment out of it than I did...without falling asleep!!!! And...Thank you very much for sharing this one - yet another 1001 book ticked off the list!

I have Cally-C’s address and plan to post it to her as soon as I can get to the post office.

5 out of 10

I can't say I really liked this. I found the characters very self-absorbed & irritatng. So caught up with their own fears they don't consider anyone else, even their children.

jellyfish67 is away, so this will be in the post as soon as I have an address.
(Edited 28th Aug 08 - book will be posted today)

Thanks tqd for sharing & ekranda for sending it on!

7 out of 10

I really liked this book - to start with. The opening section reminded me very strongly of the work of both John Irving and John Updike and I was really gripped by the characters and their situations. I though it started to tip into slight silliness in the 'Airborne Toxic Event' section and by the third part, it had seriusly deteriorated.
I agree with previous readers that the two central characters were just a bit TOO self-centred and self-absorbed for us to really warm to.
That said, it was very well written and, on balance, I'm glad I read it.
afraberg has asked to be skipped, so it's now on its way to lunacia.
Thanks very much for sharing this.

Yeiks! Another bookring! In less than a week I've gotten three bookringsbooks or so. How will I find the time to get them all read in time? This goes into the queue...

EDIT 07 August 2009
I'm so sorry it's taking me so long! This book is still on queue, but just two books to go now, and then I will start reading it!

OK, I have been trying to read this for ages. I find the book well written, great language and all, but I feel there's something missing... I can't quite put my finger on it, though. However, I'm now giving up. I've used way too long trying to read it. Will PM colbalt-tree for his or her address...

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I apologize for the delay with this book. I read it last month, but I have been unable to get to the post office. This is the first time I have ever had a book longer than a month!

I enjoyed the overall story, but the title and the picture on the book had me expecting something entirely different.

Sending to Cat207 at lunch today.

Arrived in today's mail. Thank you ChiBoiler and tqd for including me in this bookray.

I've just started reading the mammoth 'The Recognitions' but hopefully won't have the book too long.

Journal Entry 24 by cat207 from Gladstone, Queensland Australia on Friday, April 02, 2010

I enjoyed the first half of the book - found it too ridiculous to be real, but so real it was scary. Loved the conversation starting on page 80 - all that and still no answer to the original question. Reminded me of my own family!

Will send on to livrecache after the Easter break.
