I'm glad I read Barometer Rising by Hugh Maclennan first because Shreve draws many parallels between the Halifax explosion and the WTC destruction. Her book is laid out by days in the same way that Maclennan's books counts down the days to the even while focusing on the romance of his main characters. In this case, there are a number of romances between old friends who have come together for a wedding of old high school loves.

The book doesn't feel as tightly crafted as Sea Glass did to me but it carries the raw emotion that we were all feeling in those months after the WTC was destroyed.

I admire Shreve's way of creating her stories so skillfully! There was an interesting group of people meeting in a wedding 27 years after their high school years in this book and Shreve describes thoughts, feelings and the backgrounds of the characters very intensively. You can feel the atmosphere of the wedding as you were there yourself! I have liked The Pilot's Wife by this author very much, but this book was very good, too. I'm glad, I 've several other books by Shreve in my TBR-pile!
