The most influential, enduring, and iconic metal band of the 1980's reveals everything a tell-all of epic proportions.

This unbelievable autobiography explores the rebellious lives of four of the most influential icons in American rock history.

Motley Crue was the voice of a barely pubescent Generation X, the anointed high priests of backward-masking pentagram rock, pioneers of Hollywood glam, and the creators of MTV’s first “power ballad.” Their sex lives claimed celebrities from Heather Locklear to Pamela Anderson to Donna D’Errico. Their scuffles involved everyone from Axl Rose to 2LiveCrew. Their hobbies have included collecting automatic weapons, cultivating long arrest records, pushing the envelope of conceivable drug abuse, and dreaming up backstage antics that would make Ozzy Osbourne blanch with modesty.

Provocatively written and brilliantly designed, this book includes over 100 photos, many never before published, for the most exciting and insightful look ever into the Crue.

9 out of 10

Mötley Crüe has been one of my favorite bands ever since I discovered 80's hard rock. I had the good fortune to meet Nikki Sixx in 2004 when he was in Finland with Brides of Destruction (see picture to the left), and in 2005 my dream of seeing Mötley Crüe live finally came through, when they played two dates in Finland!

Even though I've had this book for years, my huge TBR pile prevented my from reading it, until in August 2006 I decided that it was time to put bookrings aside for a while, and read The Dirt instead.

I had heard so much about how shocking this book would be, that in the end I wasn't the least bit shocked. I'm just glad that the drugs didn't manage to completely destroy this band, and that they decided to reunite.

Every chapter in this book is written from one band member's viewpoint, but there are also a few chapters written by other people, for example former managers. I think it was a good idea to present some events from different angles, and it was funny to see how much the stories sometimes differed. It's a good reminder to us all that memories are rarely very accurate. :)

It was wonderful to learn more about the people in the band, and even though they all made mistakes, it was easy to sympathise with them nevertheless. I was especially surprised at how much I liked Mick Mars' chapters, as he's always been the one I've paid the least attention to. After reading this book I understood Vince Neil and Tommy Lee better. Nikki Sixx has always been my favorite, and I've admired him both as a songwriter and as a person. Reading the book and meeting him only deepened that admiration.

What makes this book so good is the honesty of the writing, and the humanity. Despite of being the ultimate sex, drugs & rock'n'roll story, it is also the story of four messed up people, who want to be happy, but get very lost somewhere along the way. While I don't approve of many of the things the band did, for once I have no trouble not passing judgement.

Will send this out as a bookring.

8 out of 10

I finished this book. I don't know what to think. I can't really believe half of what they say since if they really did take that many drugs I don't think they'd be able to have as much sex as they claim. Half the book I was disgusted with the things they did and the things they got away with doing. The other half I felt sorry for them and what some of the members had to go through. Vince's struggle with his daughter was hard to read. I can't imagine losing a child. All in all it was entertaining. It's also interesting to see where the band is today and that they are doing a reunion tour with all four of them together. Great ring. Thanks candydarling.

This book is off to acountkel today. Enjoy.

This was a really good book. I am not a big Crew fan. However, Motley Crew was big when I was a teenager in the 80’s. I saw the Behind the Music special on them and was intrigued. Any group that is going to get together and write an autobiography should read this book first. This, to me, is the epitome of how a band should write about their life. This was definitely a group effort and every one in the band, and then some, had the opportunity to contribute. The guys in this band lived the ultimate teenagers dream. Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. They lived the extreme. I am surprised they are still alive. I appreciate their openness and honesty. Nikki did have a rough childhood and it still haunts him. But I think he has come full circle and has quite simply, “grown up”. He seems to be the focal point of the group. Very smart and very focused on the band. Tommy, in my opinion, is still a kid. I think prison helped him reflect on his life and make some positive changes though. Vince will probably live with his demonds for the rest of his life. Can’t say I blame him. And Mick, the myserious one. I think he says a lot keeping quiet. I may not be a fan of their music, but I am definitely a fan of their celebrity. Great work! Highly recommend. You don’t have to be a fan to enjoy this book!
Thank you CandyDarling for giving me the opportunity to read this. I am so glad I did!

Thanks CandyDarling! This looks really interesting. I'm not a big fan of hard rock, but I find biographies of bands and artists very interesting.

Hmm, what to say about this book. I've never really paid that much attention to Mötley Crüe so most of the stories in the book were news to me. I really liked the way each band member had written their own chapters and how the stories were told from more than one viewpoint. The whole book is a bit like a car accident, you don't really want to look but somehow can't turn your eyes away. I'm really wondering how the band survived alive through the crazy years. I'm glad I got to read this book, so thanks a lot CandyDarling.

My brother mentioned that he wanted to read this as well, so next week the book will travel up north.
