From Amazon.com The most influential, enduring, and iconic metal band of the 1980's reveals everything a tell-all of epic proportions. This unbelievable autobiography explores the rebellious lives of four of the most influential icons in American rock history. Motley Crue was the voice of a barely pubescent Generation X, the anointed high priests of backward-masking pentagram rock, pioneers of Hollywood glam, and the creators of MTV’s first “power ballad.” Their sex lives claimed celebrities from Heather Locklear to Pamela Anderson to Donna D’Errico. Their scuffles involved everyone from Axl Rose to 2LiveCrew. Their hobbies have included collecting automatic weapons, cultivating long arrest records, pushing the envelope of conceivable drug abuse, and dreaming up backstage antics that would make Ozzy Osbourne blanch with modesty. Provocatively written and brilliantly designed, this book includes over 100 photos, many never before published, for the most exciting and insightful look ever into the Crue. |

Even though I've had this book for years, my huge TBR pile prevented my from reading it, until in August 2006 I decided that it was time to put bookrings aside for a while, and read The Dirt instead. I had heard so much about how shocking this book would be, that in the end I wasn't the least bit shocked. I'm just glad that the drugs didn't manage to completely destroy this band, and that they decided to reunite. Every chapter in this book is written from one band member's viewpoint, but there are also a few chapters written by other people, for example former managers. I think it was a good idea to present some events from different angles, and it was funny to see how much the stories sometimes differed. It's a good reminder to us all that memories are rarely very accurate. :) It was wonderful to learn more about the people in the band, and even though they all made mistakes, it was easy to sympathise with them nevertheless. I was especially surprised at how much I liked Mick Mars' chapters, as he's always been the one I've paid the least attention to. After reading this book I understood Vince Neil and Tommy Lee better. Nikki Sixx has always been my favorite, and I've admired him both as a songwriter and as a person. Reading the book and meeting him only deepened that admiration. What makes this book so good is the honesty of the writing, and the humanity. Despite of being the ultimate sex, drugs & rock'n'roll story, it is also the story of four messed up people, who want to be happy, but get very lost somewhere along the way. While I don't approve of many of the things the band did, for once I have no trouble not passing judgement. Will send this out as a bookring. |
