Jody never asked to become a vampire. But when she wakes up under an alley dumpster with a badly burned arm, an aching neck, superhuman strength, and a distinctly Nosferatuan thirst, she realizes the decision has been made for her. Making the transition from the nine-to-five grind to an eternity of nocturnal prowlings is going to take some doing, however, and that's where C. Thomas Flood fits in. A would-be Kerouac from Incontinence, lndiana, Tommy (to his fiends) is biding his time night-clerking and frozen turkey bowling in a San Francisco Safeway. But all that changes when a beautiful, undead redhead walks through the door... and proceeds to rock Tommy's life -- and afterlife -- in ways he never imagined possible.

10 out of 10

I first read this book two years ago, here's my original JE from August 31, 2004:

This was the best book I've read in a while! I need to read everything Christopher Moore has ever written, and soon! Thank you vi0let for giving me the opportunity find a new favorite writer!

I loved the craziness of this book! Who had ever heard of turkey bowling before this?! I love the characters, and how they react to different situations. For example, Tommy isn't really bothered by the fact that Jody is a vampire, he's just excited to have sex with a gorgeous woman. There's never a dull moment, and I just wanted to keep on reading to see what happens next. I'd recommend this book to almost anyone!

The book arrived today. Woohoo! I have a couple of bookring books to be read before this, but I'm trying to get to it soon. I'm really looking forward to reading this, especially now that I realized Christopher Moore has also written The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cave, which is no doubt one of the strangest (in a positive way) books I've ever read.

9 out of 10

He he. Now this was a fun book to read! Well, for me any vampire story with romance, humour and mystery thrown in usually works, if it's well written, as this one was.
I liked the story of Jody and Tommy very much as well as their characters. It was also interesting to find out about the secret life of Safeway night clerks - turkey bowling and all - that was hilarious.
I was amused by the many references to movies, books and songs. ("I love the smell of napalm in the morning", "Kill the pig" and all that.) I probably missed about half of them, but it was always great to spot a reference. I wonder if Moore had the song called Copacabana in mind when he named the chapter "He Was an Ex-Con, She Was Defrosted", but that phrase fits the tune perfectly...
Yep, this was a great book to read. Thanks, CandyDarling!

I got this today from the February Oulu meetup. It looks interesting and funny, so I think I might start reading it sooner than later.
Edit. I forgot to say that when CandyDarling was advertising this ring on the forum I managed to resist it then. Now at the meetup, when the book was there in front of my nose pratically screaming to come home with me, I couldn't resist anymore.

This was so much fun. Once I started it didn't take too long to finish the book, it could have been longer. :) I really liked Jody and Tommyas characters and also the story. I've never really been a big vampire fan, but this book was so different, funny, and cool that I'd like to read more.
