Synopsis
I called myself Pip, and came to be called Pip.' Great Expectations charts the progress of Pip from childhood through often painful experiences to adulthood, as he moves from the Kent marshes to busy, commercial London, encoutering a variety of extraordinary characters ranging from Magwitch, the escaped convict, to Miss Havisham, locked up with her unhappy past and living with her ward, the arrogant, beautiful Estella. In this compelling story, Dickens shows the dangers of being driven by desire for wealth and social status. Pip must establish his own sense of self against the plans which others seem to have for him, and thus discover a firm set of values and priorities. Whether such values will allow one to prosper in the complex world of early Victorian England is, however, the major question posed by Great Expectations, one of Dicken's most fascinating, and disturbing, novels.

Charles Dickens
Hugh Laurie

Great Expectations är nr. 876 på listan "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die".

Great Expectations on nro. 876 "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die"-listalla

Teen tästä eurooppalaisen ringin mikäli löytyy kiinnostuneita.
HUOM! Olen tilannut kirjan myös CD;nä, iki-ihanan Hugh Laurien lukemana. Siirrän CD:t muistitikulle ja laitan muistitikun kiertämään kirjan kaverina, joten paketista ei tule painavampaa & isompaa. HUOM! HUOM! HUOM!
Economy mail on ok!
Kysymyksiä? Lähetä minulle PM!

Great Expectations is #876 on the "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die"-list.
I will make this a European bookring. The book will be accompanied by a "memory stick" with the book in audio, read by wonderful Hugh Laurie. This way the parcel won't be very big and heavy to mail.
-Sign up via PM
-Try to read the book withing 6 weeks
-Contact the next person on the list for their address and send the book + memory stick along when you're finished.
-Please remember that this is a European bookring and that you might have to mail the book abroad! The book + memory stick aren't very heavy or big but I just thought I'd mention it anyway. Economy mail more than ok!

One of the best stories I've ever read!
I was really fascinated by this one.
Very interesting characters, of which Joe is my #1 favourite. I think I've seen various Tv adaptaions of this book over the years and could remember some of the twists and turns in the story (and the main twists and turns are presented on the back cover of the book!).
Who needs soap operas on TV when you can read Great Expecations?!!!!??? LOL LOL!
I will give this book to Potok-Fan on Friday 16th March and the European bookring will begin!
Enjoy it everyone!

I think this is the first fiction audiobook I've ever listened to. It's certainly the first I've ever listened to on my computer. I don't have an MP3 player and so it took me a while to work out when to listen to this. But finally, I had a day alone at home today, and a project to work on, and I just moved the computer into the living room and listened to this for most of the afternoon!

I'm a little ashamed to admit that it's the first Dickens I've read (apart from snippets of "A Christmas Carol"). I still haven't read the book cover-to-cover, but leafed through it, filling in at least a few of the details (and indeed whole episodes) missed out by the recording abridgment. Whether it was because of the abridgment or because I listened to almost all of it in one afternoon, I found it a bit breathless (rushed), especially when we zipped from one place or time to another.

However, listening to Hugh Laurie was fantastic! Apart from the fact that once or twice Miss Havisham's voice sounded like Mike Myers doing Dr. Evil {mind boggles}, I loved it. Two quotes in particular stood out as perfect for him, and I could just see his face as he read them. One was: I was looked after by an inflammatory old female, assisted by an animated rag-bag whom she called her niece. (p.281 in the book)

The other (even funnier, I thought): "I'd be a match for all noodles and all rogues", returned my sister, beginning to work herself into a mighty rage. "And I couldn't be a match for the noodles, without being a match for your master, who's the dunder-headed king of the noodles." (p.107) Let's hear that again: "the dunder-headed king of the noodles." Brilliant.

After a short delay (though I'm still within the 6-week limit!), this book is finally in the post on its way to the next reader. I dropped it at the post office this afternoon. Happy listening!

Thanks go to Finland for sending this to me!
Book and memory-stick arrived unharmed today.
At first I was a little puzzled, because I didn't remember about the memory-stick - I thought it was just a device to keep the parcel together *grin*! But no problem - I will be able to transfer this onto my iPod and listen to it whenever I like.

I hope I will make it within the allotted 6 weeks' time. If not, I'll send it on anyway. Promise!!

This book has been on my shelf for quite a long time now - I apologize! But, as promised, I will send it on now anyway. Read through halfway, but seeing as it is a classic, I consider buying it some day. I just asked for Cassiopaeia's address.
