Well, she can do no wrong for me with her tales of Tudor England. My heart bled for her portrayal of the silly naive Katherine Howard. Gregory really immerses you in Tudor England, the suspense, the intrigue, the passion & fear. Next please!

Being sent as a RABCK to Flanners. Enjoy J x

9 out of 10

Gregory’s usual mix of history and fiction add up to another intensely satisfying read; I liked the three voices device, with Lady Rochford as the lynchpin between the two queens. It’s good to think of Anne of Cleves living out her life independently, finally free of fear and worry, but in fact I believe Henry failed to provide for her adequately in his will and she suffered chronic financial shortages before dying relatively young. Still, how many women made old bones in the sixteenth century? And at least she had the satisfaction of out-living the king.

I desperately wish Philippa Gregory would write the story of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, whose life was touched on in this book; it’s such a cracking tale, and it needs an author of her skill to do it justice. Shall I write and suggest it to her?

Sending this on to teachie as a RABCK, as I noticed she has it on her wishlist.

Thanks again thing-1!

Thank you so much Flanners for this generous New Year RABCK. I think Philippa Gregory is such a wonderful author with great descriptive powers; she just draws you into the plight of those living during the time of the Tudors. I look forward to reading this.
Thanks for the beautiful card, so appropriate.

What a brilliant read. In a few words Philippa Gregory is able to draw a picture of the aging Henry with his smelly, repulsive, bloated body. The characters of Anne and Katherine are brought to life and the intrigue of the Tudor court is totally believable.
This book is now going into the Hardback Swap on BCUK_EXTRA

Sunlightbub brought this to me at the Convention. However, I spotted a paperback copy of it on the book buffet, so swapped this for it. I saw someone else pick this copy up, so hopefully it will be journalled again soon!

Oops, have just read the other journallers comments on ths book. I picked it up at the convention and read the first five chapters while I was still there unfortunately it really didn't work for me. I didn't feel enough difference between the various characters who narrated each cahpter and although I found the historical detail good (some silly errors that the Editors should have picked up) and I loved the brief interplay between Anne of Cleves and her sister I really didn't get along with the book. It will go along to the London MeetUp in a couple of weeks.
