Bought at the bookcrossing/transita day at Oxford town hall. So on to mnt TBR

This is an unusually moving and compulsive novel which looks at love and marriage: six women, six different but interconnected relationships. Sarah, stifled by the twin pressures of family and work, may just succumb to temptation; Kate, a romantic at heart, is tormented by the loss of love; Isobel, ever faithful to her husband, yet accepts - perhaps implicitly encourages - infidelity: Martha, whose glorious affair in her 50s is the defining moment of her life; Sheila, in an unconventional marriage, resigned to chastity, yet the most generous of spirit; and Judith, whose past demons need to be laid to rest before she can live life truthfully. By candidly exploring their lives, each character must confront some uncomfortable realities: their subsequent honesty will determine whether this leads to despair or to mutual acceptance, collective grace and, ultimately, joy.

This is an astonishingly beautiful book, poignant and powerful. The first 6 chapters, each tells the story of one of the women, all of who are connected. Each narrative voice is different and authentic, each character memorable, and well drawn. The seventh chapter, brings them altogther, and so too the story of them all. One of the things that is so well done, is the small everyday domestic details, described with such presicion, that the lives of these characters become very real. This is a novel about love, and the ties that bind, and how sometimes those ties, are not what we thought they might be. I think this is wise and wonderful writing, I loved it. I think it is Martha's story that will stay with me longest.

Received from Ali today and next on my commute-and-lunch-read TBR.

Journal Entry 5 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Wednesday, March 28, 2007
A really interesting and well-done book. Rather than weaving the characters' lives together too self-consciously from the beginning, she leaves them their own space, with a stream-of-consciousness narrative rooted so firmly in the domestic that it leaves you tear-struck with the beauty and poignancy of all those little moments in a marriage or a parent-child relationship. I found myself wondering where each woman would fit in - then an ah, yes! moment. And the final chapter seemed natural and took the viewpoint further outside the women, darting in for a close-up occasionally, and very moving.

Heartily recommended.

Will give it to Wyldetwo when I see her next.

RELEASE NOTES:

Giving to Wyldetwo today.

Passed to me by Lyzzybee at Hudson's yesterday.

I very naughtily started reading it in bed last night, as I am finding my current book (The Book of Guilt!!!) a bit hard going. But then I had been very good earlier, I'd been in two *bad* bookshops without buying anything!

Book arrived yesterday, thanks everyone. Got a couple of rings ahead of this but will set to it as soon as I can!

Just finished this book yesterday. The sign of a good book is that the characters will stay with you indefinitely and I think these characters will. I was drawn to Langdale's stream of consciousness style which coupled with the summery, dreamy atmosphere reminded me very much of what Virginia Woolf might sound like if she was still writing today.
If I had a criticism of the book its that the characters seemed a little too accepting of their situations right from the start. I would have liked to have seen a little more anger, a little more bitterness, so that they had something with which to work and progress as the novel developed.
I will definitely be keeping my eye open for Langdale’s next novel.
I’ve pmed Calalilly for an address and will get this novel moving as soon as I can.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Purpleelephant, received in the post on Tuesday at work but unfortunately I left it there and couldn't do the journal until this morning. I'm in the middle of a book at the moment but then I will get started on this.

I found this difficult to get into to start with but then once I did I really enjoyed it and found the link between each chapter very interesting.
Passing this onto Purplerosebud next time I see her.

Another very enjoyable Transita book! I liked the way each chapter was dedicated to one character and enjoyed reading the events from different perspectives. I read it very quickly as I wanted to read each chapter in one go so that I could see how they related to the rest of the characters and who was going to be next. I found the concluding chapter very satisfying. An excellent read thank you for sharing.

I''ve PMd the next on list for their address.

What an amazing debut novel!
I was delighted to discover each chapter linked so beautifully with the one before and the lives of the women were so interwoven. It is a story that easily captures your imagination and becomes extremely hard to put down.

I will now pm Molyneux and post it on!

I have just finished reading this truly delightful and well-written book. I have really enjoyed it immensely, and I really admire the way it is all woven together. I found it a really "feel good" experience.
As I am at the end of the ring, I have contacted Heaven-Ali to return it to her, but I note that Inver wanted to go on the end, so I will also PM her first.

Journal Entry 23 by Inver from Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, May 8, 2008
I couldn't not dislike this book after all the lovely reviews and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. All the characters blended and came together so well in the final chapter. Each telling there own story in an interconnecting way, but you had to wait to see how it would all come together. I related to some of the chapters with the every day things, like wanting to turn back time when you realise your children are growing up to fast. Another Transita winner. Thanks for letting us enjoy this bookring Ali. Will be winging its way home for a rest.

Posted today 8/5/08.

Read this one, long since so don't want to write a review based on vague memories. If you catch it, please make a journal entry so I know it's being looked after. That might prompt me to tell you what I thought ...
