Bought at a library book sale; book is a hardback and in great condition. I have another copy of this book on my 'To Be Read' bookshelf bookcase, so I'm bookcrossing with this one.

This copy also contains some other stories including: Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, The Happy Prince, & The Birthday of the Infanta.

When the exquisitely handsome Dorian Gray sees his portrait he dreams of remaining young forever while his painted image grows old and, in a sudden moment, he offers his soul in return for perpetual youth. While his beauty remains unblemished, the degredation of his soul as he surrenders to a worship of pleasure and infinite passion.

The Picture of Dorian Gray caused outrage when it was first published in 1890 and marked the onset of Oscar Wilde's fatal reputation and eventual downfall. An evocative portrayal of London life and a powerful blast against the hypocrisies of Victorian polite dociety it had become one of Oscar Wilde's most celebrated works, full of the flamboyant wit for which he is justly renowned.

Ok, first of all, this is one of those books that after reading it, make me wonder why didn't I read this ages ago. I really enjoyed all the stories and somehow it's hard to believe they were written so long ago. Staying young forever isn't a new idea even today. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a dark story but very gripping too. All the stories seemed to have some sort of a twist in them, I liked that.

Also I was surprised to find out that The Happy Prince was written by Oscar Wilde! I remember hearing this story when I was a child and the dying swallow always made me so sad.

Thank you, KateKintail, for giving me a chance to read this wonderful book. :o) I will try to forward this book soon...

This book was in my mailbox today. Thank you Melodramma for this wishlistbook.

Edit 3:e sept 2014. Now I have read the main story. When Dorian Gray sees a newly painted portrait of him, he expresses the wish that he always wants to be as beautiful as the portrait and the portrait instead will be getting older. His wish comes true.
There are many who love Dorian Gray's appearance and both women and men fall in love in his beautiful face. But they will finally figure out that there is a devil behind the good looking young man.
I thought the story was amusing.

Edit:14 juli 2015: The Happy Prince: The Happy Prince stands as statue in the city. But now he is not happy when he sees how poor and miserable some of the people are. If only he could help them. A bird delayed on its way to Egypt, landing at the statue's feet, and The Happy Prince succeeds with some persuasion to get the swallow to pluck gems and gold from the statue and distribute among the poor. I think the story is very beautiful.

The Birthday of the Infanta: It is a lonely existence for the princess who only get to socialize with other children once a year and this on her birthday. Then it becomes a lot of games and entertainment. She could not know that when she threw her white roses to the ugly dwarf, he thought that she was in love with him.
The fear and amazement as he then felt when he discovered his reflection in the mirror inside the castle is great .then he understands that the princess only been amused by his ugliness. This is the climax of the story. The poor dwarf which afterwards dies of a broken heart.
I thought the story was not interesting until the dwarf discovered the mirror. But then it became a masterpiece.

Lord Arthur Savile's Crime: It is not good to listen and take everything seriously to anyone who reads the future in your hand. Lord Arthur believed in all seriousness all that this fortuneteller said. This meant that someone was killed in the end. I thought that the short story was entertaining and easy to read.
