Book Description
The screenplay for the award-winning stage play, which
includes Alan Bennett's diary, the shooting script, over 40 photographs and
an Introduction by the director, Nicholas Hytner.

Synopsis
An unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. A maverick English teacher at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher. A headmaster obsessed with results; a history teacher who thinks he's a fool. In Alan Bennett's screenplay, staff room rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence provoke insistent questions about history and how you teach it; about education and its purpose. Fox Searchlight Pictures, DNA and the BBC have joined forces to bring the National Theatre's award-winning production of "The History Boys" to the big screen, directed by Nicholas Hytner from a script adapted for the screen by Alan Bennett.

I was given this for my birthday and would like to share it so offering as a ring on BCUK.

Journal Entry 5 by Iojima from Nyons, Rhône-Alpes France on Sunday, December 31, 2006

This book has not been rated.

I used to like reading plays, but I definitely do not like reading film scripts. I guess I want all the stuff that generally surrounds the dialogue. Will be going to Mallary, next.

Arrived today, can't wait to read it!

Journal Entry 7 by Mallary from Ginestas, Languedoc-Roussillon France on Friday, January 19, 2007

This book has not been rated.

Thanks for the opportunity, I've never read a screenplay before.
I was bemused by the claim (on the front cover) of over 40 photographs inside - the first 14 are printed twice so you end up with 28 unique photographs and the question of, what were the photos that they missed out? LOL :o)

To be posted to LindyB28 as soon as I have her address.

Journal Entry 8 by Mallary from Ginestas, Languedoc-Roussillon France on Monday, February 05, 2007

Still trying to reach LindyB28.
The book is parcelled up and ready to go but I have not received replies to any of my pms. I will keep trying (probably the pm gremlin at work again!).

UPDATE: 06/02/07 Book has now been posted to LindyB28. Enjoy!

The introduction, film diary and cast photos make this a fascinating read for anyone who enjoyed the wonderful film released last year.

Sorry I've hung on to this a while - I decided I really wanted to see the DVD first and it took me a while to track a copy down.

Absolutely quintessential Bennett - wonderful!

Will be off again as soon I have an address for Yesterdaysgirl.

10 out of 10

Loved this book. I read it purely because I enjoyed the film. But now I think I shall be reading more of Alan Bennet's work.

The script follows very easily, and it feels as though you are constantly in the scenes watching the History Boys; not reading the book.

I am now off to PM MrsPotage for her (I'm assuming it's a her!) address.

Journal Entry 17 by yesterdaysgirl from Frimley, Surrey United Kingdom on Monday, July 02, 2007

MrsPotage is now MmePotage and has been asked to be skipped on this ring as she is rather bogged down.

I am just off to PM PeaMartian for their address.

Recieved in the post today with thanks...

I loved Alan Bennett's Talking Heads and Untold Stories, so really looking forward to this...

I've just booked tickets to see the stage version at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle in November (2007), and having read the glowing reviews of the film given by the other members of this ring, I expect I'll be tracking down a copy of the DVD version too...

Well, once I finally got chance to pick this up it didn't take me long to finish - a short but sweet experience. I've never read a screenplay before either, and did enjoy it. I do like Alan Bennett's turn of phrase. I think the best part of the book for me was the filming diary section - I guess Alan Bennett's work in general is so appealing to me because I think he is such a good observer of people and situations. I too was quite surprised and a little disappointed by the repeated photographs, but not so much that it really spoilt the book or anything.

Just checked the date when this landed on through my letter box and got a bit of a surprise! Sorry for holding on to this for so long! PM'ing dosapples now so that it can return to it's rightful place in your PC... Thanks for sharing!!

Cheers,
PeaMartian

This arrived home safely today - thank you PeaMartian. It was the first screenplay read for a lot of people as well as me and it seems to have been enjoyed on the whole. This will now be going into my PC as it was a birthday gift from a friend, who hasn't yet noticed that it has been missing from my shelves for a while!
