St Cedd's Church fete had been held in the grounds of Martingale manor house for generations. As if organizing stalls, as well as presiding over luncheon, the bishop and the tea tent, were not enough for Mrs Maxie on that mellow July afternoon, she also had to contend with the news of her son's sudden engagement to her new parlour maid, the sly single mother, Sally Jupp. On the following morning Martingale and the whole village are shocked by the discovery of Sally Jupp's body. Investigating the violent death at the manor house, Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh is embroiled in the complicated passions beneath the calm surface of English village life.

Ist gut bei mir angekommen. Vielen Dank.
27.1. first it was a bit strange to read a crime novel that old. The morals were a bit different and some things sounded funny from a todays point of view. But when it comes to murder, things are not that different after all. I really liked the book. It came with a few surprises at the end, that's more than I can say about a lot of modern crime novels.

The book arrived today and will be read as soon as I finish my current reading.
I had a nice day with P.D. James at a little symposium at my university last year, drinking coffee and talking about English crime fiction, so I'm really looking forward to reading her Dalgliesh novels now.
Thanks a lot, boagat and gatoleer!

I very much enjoyed reading this book. Well, it may not contain as much action and excitement as other crime novels - it's more like a classical whodunnit - but it is very well-written and also introduces an interesting investigating officer. I would have liked to learn a bit more about Adam Dalgliesh's own life but I guess that's part of P.D. James's clever strategy - I'll probably have to read the other novels to find out more about the police officer cum poet...
Thanks for this bookring! The book will be sent on to haley79 next week.

Thank you, sintra! The book arrived here safely today, and I am so looking forward to reading more about Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh and his team.
Oh, finally I finished this book. But the delay is definitely not due to the dullness of the book, but my lack of time during the last months.
'Cover her face' is a great crime novel, the very first of P.D. James' murder mystries, as far as I know, and it was a great pleasure for me to read this book and to discover the slight changes in style of writing, the development the author and her heroe Adam Dalgleish underwent during more than fourty years of writing. Great story. Enjoy!

Has safely arrived here. Thank you, sanne2.
I found the first third of the book rather boring actually but then it became more interesting. And it took me quite a long time to guess who the murder is.
Thanks to galoteer for this ring. It will continue its journey tomorrow.

Gestern mit der Post eingetroffen-Danke!

I read the book and it took some time...very interesting are the after-war circumstances: some of the protagonists lost their parents in WW II ,or
they got injured. And there are still many ruins described.I do not remember any
mystery with such descriptions!
The funniest lines are about English food:
"Dalgleish and Martin sat in the small parlour of The Moonraker's Arms in the state of repletion without satisfaction which commonly follows a poor meal.(> they remember continental food in Italy and France, enjoyed during their services in wartime...)
Mrs. Piggott (the cook) was reputed to take trouble with her soups. This was true in so far as the packaged ingredients had been well mixed to exclude lumps. She had even
experimented with flavours and today's mixture of tomato (orange) and oxtail (reddish brown), thick enough to support the spoon unaided, was as startling to the palate as to the eye. Soup had been followed by a couple of mutton chops nestling artistically against a mound of potato and flanked with tinned peas larger and shinier than any pea that has seen a pod. They tasted of soya-flour.(...)"

Finished the book yesterday and really enjoyed reading it. The story itself and the development of the figures and the happenings are very slowly - but sometimes I really enjoy this kind of reading :-)
Going to send it to the next participant as soon as possible :)

Travelling to Somipago tomorrow - I'm confused - maybe I forgot Jessi or she wants to be at the end of the ring - please ask her after Somipago - and sorry if its my fault!
can soon travel on...
Arrived at some day last week. Thanks!
I couldn't get into the book. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's just that I don't like classic mysteries?! I haven't tried many of those yet, so this could be a reason. Anyway, I didn't finish the book, sorry.
