London 1914: Richard Hannay is just back in London from a longer stay in Rhodesia, and within shortest time he is bored of life in the city. However, his life is taking a rather unexpected turn when he meets a Mr Scudder who asks for his help with a delicate political affair. When he finds Mr Scudder dead in his own appartment a couple of days later, Hannay suddenly finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy. He nevertheless decides to continue with Scudder's efforts to prevent murder. From then on he is on the run not only from the police but from the German conspirators as well...
