On seeing 180 generously spaced pages, at first I suspected this as being just a gentle pot-boiler for the aged maestro. Well, it could be longer, but RatRoT still displays all the wit, fizz and elegant writing of vintage Rumpole.

This story has the added spice of trenchant contemporary satire, in which Mortimer savages the Labour Government's erosion of British civil rights and the time-honoured processes of law.

Sadly, this tale will never become a TV drama starring the late lamented Leo McKern, RIP.

Christmas RABCK from Miketrollstigen. I do love Rumpole -- and I'm very sorry the Leo McKern died. Sometimes we can even find ITV in the ether.

Apologies for the delay in journalling. We have been trying to get broadband installed and internet access has been patchy.

Totally hilarious, especially the serious parts about infringement of individual rights and freedoms.
I believe this is my first Mortimer. The syntax is bizarre, it lacks rhythm, it occasionally appears that either Mortimer has forgotten he's used a phrase or maybe he just likes it, so he uses it, again. And behind all that, I keep hearing and seeing Leo McKern and I loved it.
Many thanks, Miketrollstigen.

I DO wish BookCrossing would make it possible for AnonnymousFinder to edit or delete journal entries. Said AF is me, who did not realise she wasn't signed in.

Another of John Mortimer's romps through the legal system, a fairly light and easy read on the surface, but also a serious indictment of how our civil liberties have been eroded by this government.

How many people in this country realise that they can now be held without trial indefinitely?

I would recommend that more people read it.
