The Deep
2 journalers for this copy...
The second novel, I think, from one-hit-wonder Peter Benchley. OK, on the cover it says that this one is/was a bestseller too, but really - after 'Jaws', what can compare? Though this seems to make its best effort to try as it also deals with monsters of the deep, sharks among them, in fact. We'll see. Update will follow.
I got this book at a flea market at Vinderen elementary school in Oslo on Sunday, November 5th, 2006.

I started reading this book on Friday. So far so good ... although not on the level of 'Jaws'. An OK read. No sea monsters in evidence so far ...
Finished this on Tuesday, April 29th.
There weren't any real sea monsters in this one. :-) Just some regular sharks and morays. I guess I misread the blurb - gee, I wonder how that can have happened ... ! ;-)
Well, I stand by my first assessment - an OK read. Entertaining and relatively well written, but nothing that special. 'Jaws' is better, no contest. It's more clever with a 'twistier' plot. This plot was pretty straightforward, nothing that kept me really wondering. But it was perfectly acceptable entertainment and had some good characters.
The book was interesting in that what seemed kind of racist to me in the descriptions of the black characters - racist in the sense that I don't think anyone would phrase things that way today - was probably totally normal 30 years ago.
The descriptions of the diving and various things to do with that was very credible; it's obvious that Benchley really 'wrote what he knew' in this book.
Available for new readers now - will probably be released pretty soon.

A good book. A fast book to read, and good action in there.
The end could have been better though. The end seemed a little unfinished.
But all over it was an O.K. book.
Releasing it in Ørsta (The next town to the one where i live, Volda.) at the airport, hope it will have a nice long trip.
