In this second book in the Inspector Monk series a murder in an aristocratic London household pits Inspector William Monk against the Victorian sense of propriety, a bootlicking superior officer and a family's fierce desire to protect its reputation.

Great swap, and thanks for sending so fast...will start tonight and polly-w is interested in having it afterwards :o)

Edit Feb 24
Okay, so this arrived with polly before I could make another journal entry :O)
I loved the book, this really is a series I need more of (both polly and me and been desperately looking for continuance after both being on the ring for the 1st book)
What I find especially intriguing as a reade of much *contemporary* crime fiction is how they have to make do without the things taht are natural detective tools for us, like fingerprints and DNA testing...would save them much grief, I'm sure, but it adds to the charm.
And of course, Monk, Callandra and Hester are great, the case was very well construed, wouldn't have guesed the ending- and the resolution was so unexpected and sad it was -quite literally- a stab to the heart.
Great book, thanks!

Journal Entry 4 by polly-w from Nürnberg, Bayern Germany on Saturday, February 24, 2007
The book arrived safely today - thanks so much! I very much enjoyed the two Monk books I have read so far and I am looking forward to reading this one!
It has to rest a little while until I have finished two other bookrings.

Journal Entry 5 by polly-w from Nürnberg, Bayern Germany on Saturday, August 4, 2007
Seems as I forgot to make a journal entry after having read this book...Actually, I have read it months ago - sorry!
I liked it very much and am looking forward to more Anne-Perry-books...

This will be a ray - there are already two participants, and as soon as I get the first address, it will continue its journey:

Journal Entry 7 by Annieselan from Fulda, Hessen Germany on Tuesday, August 7, 2007

I got this book from Polly-W via Mail and I`ve started to read it today. I`m a big Anne-Perry-Fan and so I´m looking forward to read it.
The previous Journal-entry (anonymous) was mine, I forgot my log-in, sorry.

Edit:

I´m done reading now and I´m sending the book to Trinibell. I´ve enjoyed this book. To unterstand everything you should have read the first book, because the trial of the murderer from Hester Latterly`s and William Monk`s first case is a part of this book. Luckily I´ve read the first case, but it was a while ago. :-)

I needed a very long time to read that book. At the beginning I had some problems to get used to the language, cause I was used to american authors, that use a simpler language...... I really liked the book because of the picture that you get from the victorian time. Anne Perry can really well describe the atmosphere. I also like Monk. But the tension only arouse at the end of the book :(
The book will travel tomorrow to the next person.

Journal Entry 12 by rotewoelfin from Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Thursday, November 15, 2007
Picked it up today - thank you for shipping!

Journal Entry 13 by rotewoelfin from Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Sunday, January 6, 2008
Really a great one - I enjoyed the reading very much, although I didn't read the first book and didn't know anything about the Grey case. I also had some problems in the beginning with the language but then find it more and more easy to follow the plot of the story - and I couldn't imagine until the end who it was! Think I will read more of Monk in the future!

Know I'm going to think over what I will do with the book - ask in the forum for more readers or take it with me to the next MeetUp... :)
